Kinesio Taping: the "patches" that improve sports performance

Such applications are an aid to balance the body and give other benefits that we will see in the article. Back in the limelight because used by Luca Braidot and Fabian Rabensteiner in this 2022.

Kinesio taping has existed for some time, this year we have noticed how some athletes are using it and we have had very interesting results. In particular Fabian Rabensteiner and Luca Braidot, who, however, have also used Omstrip, an energy optimizer (if you want to learn more here is the test article).

In classical Kinesio we talk about the application of an elastic cotton patch, ideal for treating small neurological and orthopedic lesions. Its conception is due to a Japanese chiropractor, Dr. Kenzo Kase, who studied in the United States and devised this method more than 35 years ago as an answer to the limitations encountered with rigid taping normally used in sports (70s). .

These treatments are used in case of small subcutaneous edema and hematomas, tendinitis, cervical arthrosis, but also to relieve pain from contractures and muscle tension. Kinesio taping does not release active ingredients and if applied correctly it can be a valuable aid in rehabilitation. Finally, kinesio taping protects tendons and ligaments by keeping the joints in the correct position.

Attention: taping essentially means "bandage" or "bandage". Many believe that kinesio taping is the "fashionable" application of colored bandages. In reality, the scope of kinesio taping is very vast and also includes rather complex treatments.

The verified effects are:

  • decrease in pain
  • inhibit muscle movement or action (or muscle tone for a spastic muscle)
  • facilitate a movement
  • promote lymphatic drainage in the case of edema
  • promote muscle activation

Contraindications to the application of kinesio taping?

No, because it is basically an elastic patch and does not contain any type of drug. The only "side effects" are:

  • an allergic reaction to the glue on the patch.
  • an irritation of the skin after removal.

BEYOND KINESIO TAPING

Fabian Rabensteiner won the European title a few weeks ago and we know he uses OmStrip on a daily basis. The secret of victory? As reported by De Bertolis, there is no magic wand, but many pieces put together give an advantage. Luca Braidot also made use of it in his victory at Lenzerheide. In addition to the classic treatments explained above, more and more athletes are also using Omstrip as an energy optimizer.

CONCLUSION

Kinesio Taping is not a patch that must be applied by an expert otherwise it has no benefit and, indeed, could have adverse effects (avoid DIY on YouTube).

Kinesio Taping is a valid ally of the physiotherapist, who can use this tool together with all the other techniques to treat a back pain, a shoulder pain, a runner who wants to run with less pain or a biker who wants to cushion all the stresses to which it is subjected in a competition or training.
