Trek Remedy Test 9.8

trek remedy finetto

Trek has updated its Remedy: the frame has undergone a lightening in the face of a declared greater stiffness. The aggressive all-mountain of the American giant, which winks at the most pedaled enduro, is also compatible with the plus format (up to 2.8 ″) and more color options are available. 160mm travel at the front and 150mm at the rear. 27,5 ″ format. Let's get to know her.

The new Remedy also abandons the Full Floater system, a technology that provided for 2 anchoring points suspended for the rear shock absorber, which gave the impression of a wider excursion but on the other side of the lower pedaling performance. New this year is that it will be possible to have a double color for each model, or rather, the original Miami Green will be available in each model. By now we have forgotten how years ago you had to choose the color on each model, even arriving at multiple proposals.

Trek Remedy

FEATURES

The frame is fully OCLV Mountain Carbon with the exception of the chainstays. Even the wheels, of the Bontrager Line, have a carbon structure (30mm channel). The suspension is Rockshox with RE: aktiv technology with Trek's Thru Shaft damper: a hydraulic system with a regressive valve that unlocks automatically in the event of violent impacts, thus providing a more stable pedaling platform. The Thru Shaft, on the other hand, eliminates the movement of the oil caused by the piston and therefore eliminates the need for a pressurized internal membrane. The frame is well maintained with internal cable routing, plenty of room for tires (up to 2.8 ”) and bottle cage. The upper shock mount switches to the trunnion system.

VERSIONS AND COMPONENTS

The new Remedy 2019 is available in 5 models plus the option of the frame only. The 2 entry models, Remedy 7 and 8, have an aluminum frame and are offered respectively at € 2.569 and € 3.099. Good fitting for the latter which is perhaps the best in the range in terms of value for money: Rockshox Lyric RC fork, Sram Guide R brakes, RockShox Deluxe RT3 shock absorber and Sram GX Eagle 12v gearbox. To go up we find the models with carbon frame, where the entry base (the 9.7) we find it at € 3.599, with Sram NX Eagle 12v gearbox, Rockshox Lyric RC fork, Sram Guide R brakes and RockShox Deluxe RT3 shock absorber. Slightly above we find 9.8 (in test, complete assembly on the last page) and 9.9, a real 'Porn Bike'. All Remedy models use 12-speed SRAM Eagle with 32-tooth front chainring. Trek Remedy 7: 2.569 € Trek Remedy 8: 3.099 € Trek Remedy 9.7: 3.599 € Trek Remedy 9.8: 5.129 € Trek Remedy 9.9: 7.199e Carbon frame kit: 3.279 € Aluminum frame kit: 1.799 €.

GEOMETRY

The dimensions of the Remedy remain almost unchanged compared to the last version: only the seat tube more vertical than 1 ° which also leads to an increase in reach (but by a trifle, 1-2mm). The steering angle is 65.5 ° while the rear is 435mm. Wheelbase of 1206mm with a ground clearance of 439mm. Enduro odds but which wants to be more playful and fun than the Trek steamroller that responds to the name of Slash, which also uses the 29 "format unlike the Remedy which remains at 27,5".

Sizes 15.5, 17.5, 18.5, 19.5 (test), 21.5
Steering angle Inline
Vertical tube 470 mm
Head tube 110 mm
Rear wagon 435 mm
Wheelbase 1206 mm
Bottom bracket height 349 mm
Reach 455 mm

THE RESPONSE OF THE TEST

The Remedy is excellent as a balance of the biker in the middle: on the other hand by now the geometries have reached superfine levels and it is difficult to get on a bike, especially an established model like the Remedy, and feel out of place. Uphill he gets along very well and, a bit like the Slash, the use of a fixed anchor instead of the Full Floater has earned him points on the ride: a more rigid and concrete system. In fact, the current Remedy is among the most pedalable bikes on the market thanks to the Re: aktiv system (and considering the 2.6 ”tires fitted). When we close the register (Lock), the bike offers a very firm and decisive adjustment. The cranks are 175mm and this also gives more fluidity to the pedaling, thanks to the non-use of unsuitable measures (for example 170mm on sizes L / XL). The Mino Link system remains very useful to allow you to change the geometries in a minute using a 5mm Allen key. Downhill the bike is playful and fun, while cornering is truly lightning-fast and allows for violent and creative insertions. It lacks a bit the stability that other modern category rivals have, but the Remedy is with pleasure in this position and many admirers will love it for this: fun but still fast and precise, able to perform even without extreme driving positions. In fact, in modern enduro, not all bikers find the right place: 29 ”, abnormal reach and very open angles, data that the advanced biker can exploit in his favor but exaggerated for a less aggressive / inexperienced biker. In the case of active riding, the Remedy offers many ideas and broadens the smile at the end of the descent for the most creative / technical bikers. The ABP system, as it has been for many years now, works and does not completely inhibit the suspension in the event of braking, acquiring a lot of positive feedback in the case of non-expert bikers.

The Knock Block limits the rotation of the handlebar so much and it almost feels like being on a double plate (a bit exaggerated). However, it did not limit downhill performance. The progression curve is a typical behavior of a classic enduro bike: as the end of the race approaches, the curve becomes progressively more progressive. Mention to the fact that it is now possible to replace the shock absorber without problems having no proprietary measure. The 4 ”Bontrager SE2.6 Team Issue tires are good: despite the plus format, they convinced us on the descent even if a slightly narrower and smoother tire fits when pedaling. In steep and technical descents, the limited reach does not allow us to have the control we will have on more specific geometries, think of the Slash: this is a shame for the agonist who perhaps wants to race on a 27,5 "format (and not on the 29 ”by Slash) but there is a slightly short top tube geometry, therefore not very stable in the toughest and most battered sections. The solution is the extra size but requires a high horsepower given the height of the seat tube which does not go in symbiosis with the reach which remains contained. Surely this is a Trek choice that gives the Remedy a more reactive / fun character on the descents and performing on the climbs than purely racing when the road goes down. The mime link should not be underestimated: in our opinion, the Remedy can bring out the best of itself in the 'High' position and used as an all-rounder: from trail laps to super technical alpine laps, without the hassle of the race.

Verdict

ENDURO FUN
If you are looking for an enduro that is performing but still has fun characteristics, the Remedy is the bike for you. The use of the 27,5 "format goes in this direction to keep responsiveness and agility at higher levels than, for example, the Slash, a real 29" steamroller. The Remedy is a model that has reached its full maturity and, without major changes compared to last year, we place it among the best performing bikes: from technical alpine tours to easier excursions.
