We used Renthal's Fatbar Carbon model for an entire year, a handlebar used by many athletes downhill World Cup. Its features are the UD carbon construction, tested for the maximum combination of stiffness and shock absorption. It has an increased width and an oversized central section: compatible with double crown DH forks and 800mm width (with the possibility of course cutting it later).

VERSIONS

The Renthal Fatbar is offered in 4 different rise versions: 10mm, 20mm, 30mm and 40mm. All these versions are produced with 35mm and 31.8mm diameters (2 different standard handlebar diameters). All other geometric values", such as backsweep and upsweep, remain unchanged in all versions.

FIELD TEST

I found myself extremely comfortable with the Renthal handlebars straight away. Its geometric values are excellent: the Upsweep is 5° while the Backsweep is 7°. I remember that the Upsweep value helps in riding with high elbows while the backsweep serves to make the position of the wrist on the handlebars natural.

What do Rise, Backsweep and Upsweep mean in MTB handlebars?

The control it gives is very evident, there is almost no flex and it gives an idea of exceptional stability. We also had the pleasure of using it in combination withRenthal Apex 35mm stem: excellent aesthetic but also functional combination.

Differences compared to the aluminum version?

In the case of gravity bikes, the difference is not easily perceptible but, in my case, the use of a carbon handlebar makes the front feel slightly less abrupt, as if I had the return 1 click slower, aluminum being a more reactive material. However, this does not change my riding style or performance.

HOW MUCH DOES THE RENTHAL FATBAR CARBON 35 COST

The carbon model (under test) is offered, in all versions, at the price of €192, in both the 35mm and 31.8mm models. The Fatbar 35 model (in aluminium) drops to €95.

THE VERDICT

A handlebar that does not disappoint

The Renthal Fatbar35 handlebar is recommended for those who practice gravity disciplines, such as downhill or enduro. In the catalog we also find LITE versions, lighter and recommended for less demanding uses, such as cross country/all-mountain. Quality workmanship and uncompromising materials are the characteristics that keep Renthal among the leaders in this sector. In a year of use I have never had any problems: an excellently built carbon handlebar that gives comfort and not absolute rigidity (like some low-end carbon handlebars).

[email protected] I am passionate about everything that has 2 wheels: in my youth I practiced competitive cycling on the road and on the track with good results. At the age of 18 I moved to cross country competing at national/international level as U23. Once I passed Elite, I made the choice to take things easier from the training point of view, and that's how my love for gravity disciplines was born, training as an FCI MTB instructor and guide. Now I have made my passion my profession by managing 3 MTB centers on the island of Elba (Elba MTB), creating the FANTAmtb and telling in an ironic but professional way, everything that revolves around MTB thanks to 365mountainbike and 365TV (YouTube 'PULITI dentro BIKER fuori').
