TEST SMITH Payroll Mips® Helmet: A High Quality Product

One of the open face helmets with the highest safety rating: here is the Smith Optics Payroll helmet with MIPS system tested for you.

Ride with confidence in the evolution of Smith's Forefront helmet: with MIPS® and full Koroyd® impact protection, it's now safer than ever. Designed to integrate seamlessly with goggles and sunglasses, this helmet eliminates hot air to prevent fogging.

Twenty vents keep you cool and an adjustable visor lets you easily lock in your goggles between rides or clip in your goggles for safekeeping in either the front or back.

The lightweight in-mold construction houses a Koroyd® shell on the inside for optimum impact protection, while the addition of the MIPS® Brain Protection System reduces rotational forces caused by angled impacts to the head in the event of a crash. In addition to CPSC and CE EN 1078 certifications, Payroll is also NTA-8776 e-bike certified, which tests helmets at higher speeds to support even more severe impact protection.

IN WHAT COLORS IS THE SMITH PAYROLL AVAILABLE?

There are 6 colors available in 4 different sizes: S, M, L and XL. The Payroll is produced only in the MIPS version (only model).

KOROYD

Koroyd offers advanced breathability and an ultra-lightweight feel, but most importantly, better protection that can reduce the risk of sustaining life-threatening injuries. Koroyd’s welded tubes instantly and consistently crumple on impact, absorbing maximum force in a controlled manner, minimizing the energy transferred to the head. Traditional energy absorbers act like a spring, storing the energy from an impact and releasing it in a micro-moment of time. Because of this, more energy could be transferred to the head, increasing the risk of injury.

When Koroyd is struck, energy is better absorbed through sacrificial plastic deformation. The material acts as a true energy absorber rather than a spring, curling up, absorbing, and protecting the wearer.

OUR IMPRESSIONS

Smith presents the new Payroll helmet with a semi-shell structure suitable for Enduro, Trail and e-MTB rides. An open helmet but with a protective optic, therefore less inclined to Cross Country. The test lasted several months on the Island of Elba at our Bike Center and I was impressed with the fit and style, although that's a personal preference. The helmet integrates well with goggles (tested with multiple brands) and the placement and shape of the side vents are perfectly contoured to keep sunglasses upside down under the visor.

The locking system is easy to adjust and fits very well, and can also be adjusted vertically. The visor that tilts downwards is excellent. The integration with Aleck sensors is excellent, which we tested on another occasion. It is a great technology to increase safety, especially for those who often ride alone.

HOW MUCH DOES Smith Payroll MIPS COST?

Smith Payroll is available in five color options with an MSRP of €200, plus a new Matte Black/ì design in collaboration with Aleck® (MSRP €250) that integrates the new Aleck CS intelligent impact sensor directly into the helmet adaptation system. Weighing 400gr in medium size, it is now available at selected retailers worldwide and online at smithoptics. com.

+The helmet is comfortable and convenient
Many technologies present: MIPS Evolve and the Koroyd Honeycomb energy absorber
3-position visor
EN1078, US CPSC and NTA-8776 certified
-The high protection is paid for in weight (400gr)
The price is also slightly higher than the competition due to these technologies

HOW MUCH DOES THE SMITH PAYROLL HELMET WEIGH?

Our medium size stopped the scale at 400g.

FINAL VERDICT

An excellent helmet for the e-biker or anyone who wants a lot of protection

Great helmet for trail riding riding or for e-bike riding. Or simply for those who like to do technical tours without necessarily having to use full-face helmets. It is one of the few mountain bike helmets to be certified for e-bikes (yes, there is also a certification for this purpose).
