TEST – Aleck TOCSEN fall arrest sensor: greater safety

What is it about? A sensor to be affixed to the helmet which interfaces with a free App (iOS and Android) to be installed on a smartphone.

It is able to send a help notice in case of a fall. Available in pink or black, it is sold at a price of € 79,90 (can be ordered on the manufacturer's website).

WHO ARE THE INVENTORS?

Alexander Schumacher, engineer specialized in automotive, Andreas Botsch, graduate in economics and Malte Buttjer, many years of experience in the field of digital media, are the inventors of Tocsen, an ambitious project that has found lifeblood from crowdfunding, given that the first mass production is was financed in this way and the start-up started selling the detectors on its online store.

It all started with an experience lived in first person by their companion, Tom, a boy like many others, who in September 2017 decides to go out but is the victim of an accident. He has traveled that path in the woods a thousand times, he feels safe. An oversight, perhaps a root and the boy falls to the ground.

Tom wears the helmet but still violently hits his head and loses consciousness. There is no one around: Tom wakes up, he doesn't know where he is, he doesn't remember anything, he can't call for help. He passes out again, over and over again.

Eventually, by pure chance, some passersby reach him and help him and luckily Tom is fine today. But ... What if no one found him? What if the rescue arrived late?

The answer was TOCSEN: as soon as the sensor detects a shock, the app asks the user how he is. If there is no reaction, Tocsen automatically sends a distress call within 30 seconds.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The sensor is charged via the classic USB-c cable and must be affixed to the helmet, using 3M glue (like the gopro attachments). The position is free, on the side or in the back: the only precaution is that it is behind the ears. The battery life is very long, estimated at about 120 hours, which is equivalent to about three months for normal use (Bluetooth Low Energy low energy connectivity). The sensor is waterproof (IP67 specification).

Two essential conditions for the Tocsen system to work are: GPS signal and telephone present and active. The very first step is to download the Tocsen app on your phone and open a profile with your basic data (any photo, name and phone number). We have 3 main tabs: Protection, Rescue and Settings. On protection we find the data of our sensor (status and battery) while on settings we can select various intrinsic aspects of the app, including many FAQs and information materials translated into Italian. The option, which can be activated or not, relating to returning home is very interesting: the app also detects when you do not return home within the scheduled time. The most important tab is certainly the one relating to rescue, where we can select the actions that the app will have to do once the fall has been detected: call to the emergency contacts and / or to the rescue community. We select the emergency contacts, from 1 up to a more conspicuous number: it could be the friend, the parents, the lover, in short, all those people you would like to notify in case of help. The rescue community are all users who are part of the Tocsen community and who, through the dedicated function, have made themselves available in case of need. Such users will be notified of your emergency call (of course those nearby, not Swedish or Anglo-Saxon users). The last option is the emergency text message, an option that cannot be deactivated if we have not installed the Tocsen app for your emergency contacts, since this would be the only way to notify them of our problem.

BUT HOW DOES IT WORK IN PRACTICE?

In the event of a non-response within the time provided by the App (30 seconds), the emergency contacts and / or the community are immediately alerted.

When a fall occurs, the detector detects the anomaly and immediately requests confirmation of the conditions from the user (also by means of an audible signal in the event of a false alarm or a fall of no serious entity). In the event of a non-response within the time provided by the App (30 seconds), the emergency contacts and / or the community are immediately alerted (methods explained in the previous paragraph). You will receive a text message, containing a link with all the info, otherwise, if we have installed the Tocsen application, we can see the request for help via notification.

The user can also call the single European emergency number (NUE) 112 using a key while those who receive the report of a fall, family member or member of the community, can quickly go to the accident site, call the biker in difficulty or choose to call for help directly if you are sure of a serious problem, clearly knowing the position of the biker.

PROJECTED IMPACT

It's all very simple and intuitive, no learning curve: just install the app, turn on the phone and you will be guided in a few steps to get the system up and running. Graphics are essential and this is good: no style lessons but only the information that can be used.

If you often go alone, Tocsen could be an extra security. Alpina and Uvex have decided to integrate the device in some of their most representative models, this to the benefit of the seriousness and reliability of the project.

We have not found any defects except the fact that in a while we have to come out with 4 active applications, 2 mobile phones: but perhaps it is better to give up first other playful applications rather than security.

Tocsen is affordable online and presents a total Italian translation of the app: available in pink or black, it is priced at € 79,90.
