After testing the Patrol, trail tire that winks at the world of XC, the time has come to try a tire designed for a completely different sector: gravity.
The Taiwanese brand CST has in fact developed the Gravateer, a tire designed to cope with the stresses of modern downhill and enduro MTBs.
On a technical level, the package is what you would expect from a product in this segment:
- 60 TPI casing,
- weight around 1500 grams,
- triple composition mix,
- anti-puncture internal membrane,
- 2.5 inch section.
Basically, everything you need to ensure resistance and support when the going gets tough.
Assembly and first impressions
Compared to its trail cousin, installing the Gravateer proved surprisingly simple. There were no particular difficulties with either bead-unseating or inflation: the operation was quick and seamless.
From an aesthetic point of view, the tread is partly reminiscent of the Maxxis Assegai, albeit with less imposing studs and a more limited contact surface.
On the field
The first sensation, once in the saddle, is that of a rubber smooth and “light” – even though the scales tell a different story.
The knob arrangement reduces rolling resistance compared to other tires in the same category. On dirt roads or flowing trails, the bike almost seems to "slide" like with an XC tire.
Some might argue that this isn't the priority of gravity tires. In reality, if we broaden our gaze to disciplines such as enduro, the most demanding all-mountain, or the e-bike world, smoothness becomes an important plusLess friction means less fatigue and more fluidity, especially in the pedaled sections.
The grip on climbs inspires confidence in any condition: from loose surfaces to steep sections, the rear stays planted. As long as your legs hold, you can climb practically anywhere.

Downhill
The Gravateer is at its best on tight, winding trails, where quick changes of direction make the difference. Here the tire shows its character. responsive, dynamic and fun, perfect for those who love active driving.
On flowing, well-developed routes – like those reminiscent of Pogno – the ability to let the bike flow and maintain speed when changing direction is particularly appreciated.
On the most damaged and very broken sections, however, you pay something in terms of stability compared to more massive coverings.
Conclusions
The CST Gravateer is positioned as a cover versatile, designed not only for pure gravity, but also for:
- challenging all mountain, where robustness is needed without seeking the extreme;
- e-bike, thanks to the solid structure that supports the weight of the vehicle but at the same time offers greater maneuverability;
- hardcore cycle mountaineering, where the priority is to have a tire that is resistant to punctures but still smooth going uphill and agile going downhill.
In short, the Gravateer isn't just a downhill tire: it's a tire multipurpose, capable of adapting to different scenarios, combining robustness, smoothness and a good dose of driving fun.
