Test CANYON SENDER CFR: beast of the DOWNHILL

We tried the bike Downhill of Canyon, used by Loris Revelli, namely the Sender.

After several years of development, the Sender arrived last year renewed with a carbon model equipped with new kinematics: format 29 "in the larger sizes (L and XL) while Mullet (27,5" rear and 29 "rear) in the S and M. The geometry is variable so we can use the Mullet trim even in larger sizes. 200mm excursion.

Our test bike is in size L so 29 ”total… a real tank for the descent! The new Sender CFR comes from the research and development of the Official Team where Troy Brosnan stands out and, from this year, the Italian Loris Revelli. The new frame is lighter (600gr) and, according to Canyon, more performing, with a new suspension system (anchoring of the shock absorber on the down tube instead of on the top tube).

The shock absorber housing is perfectly integrated into the frame

The abbreviation CFR in our test model indicates the Canyon Factory Racing, underlining the intended use absolutely racing no ifs and buts. The structure is totally in carbon, including the rear stay and the main connecting rod.

FEATURES

The new location of the shock has allowed to increase the strength since the frame is subjected to less stress having centered much of the structural stress in a single point. This solution also brings another advantage: the lowering of the bike's center of gravity.

New positioning of the rear shock absorber compared to the last version of the SENDER

The damping scheme is a quadrilateral with Horst joint. The system is of the Pull type (and not push), that is, we have the carriage that pulls a linkage to itself (it does not push it), which naturally in turn activates the connecting rod on which the shock absorber is placed. Years ago I talked about it with Tomaso Ancillotti, a great supporter of this system on his bikes. He talked to me about how it was more stable to drag an object to itself than to push it: in the 1st case it remains in axis, in the 2nd it can work not in axis.

New Pull type wishbone damper pattern

Canyon embodies the behavior of its suspensions in one concept: Triple Phase Suspension. The system guarantees high sensitivity in the first part of the excursion, excellent support in the middle of the travel and an extremely progressive curve in the last part.

Below the down tube, we find a plastic shell (screwed to the frame) that protects both the frame and the fulcrum of the lower connecting rod. Even the lower sheath of the wagon is protected in a very careful way with the use of a sturdy chain guard and rubber protections inside. The suspension is entrusted to Rockshox with a BoXXer Ultimate at the front and a Super Deluxe Ultimate DH.

The bearings are sealed (with replaceable threaded inserts) and very strong (double sealing) while the rear fender protects a lot from dirt and debris. Canyon has positioned a rubber protection fixed to the frame by means of an Allen screw which has the function of preventing the double plate fork from impacting the frame.

Bearings well fixed

The transmission is specific Downhill made by SRAM with 36 crankset, 7/11 25-speed cassette and X01 DH rear derailleur and command. Precise components and substance as a true DH wants. Brake department by SRAM with the Code RSC model, i.e. the SRAM brakes dedicated to gravity disciplines. The cockpit is entirely manufactured by Canyon with its G5 components intended for the gravity segment. The handlebar is in carbon fiber, with 800mm of width and 20mm of rise.

VERSIONS AND COMPONENTS

The Sender is available in 4 versions: 2 in carbon and 2 in aluminum. The starting point is the SENDER 5 proposed at € 2.799 with RockShox Boxxer Select, RockShox Super Deluxe Select R and SRAM GX DH 7s mounting. Then we move on to SENDER 6: SRAM GX DH 7s, Marzocchi Bomber CR fork and Marzocchi Bomber 58 shock absorber. Price? € 3.299 The linkage of the aluminum model is different from the new test version in carbon.

The 2 carbon models are offered at € 4.699 (Sender CFR FMD) and € 5.799 (Sender CFR in test). The assembly of the Sender CFR under test, you can find it at the bottom of this test. The Sender CFR FMD mounts Shimano Saint M820 SS, FOX Performance Elite 40 Float and ammo FOX DHX2 EVOL Performance Elite.

GEOMETRY

The geometric dimensions of the Sender CFR remain extreme for the downhill: compared to the old model there are no stratospheric changes, but the frame has been updated thanks also to various "Flip Chips" that allow variable geometries. One possibility is to be able to adjust the length of the chainstay by 10mm again via the Flip Chip (in the old model it was 16mm), choosing between Short or Long.

Possibility to modify the carriage (and therefore the wheelbase) by means of a simple FLIP CHIP

Another change that can be obtained by replacing the standard flip chips in the headset area is a higher or lower reach of 8mm (and indirectly vary the head angle from 62 ° to 64 °). Last option, the fact of being able to decide whether to put 27,5 "or 29" at the rear: once the format has been chosen, the relative Flip Chip must be positioned in the correct position, in order to maintain the geometric dimensions envisaged by Canyon.

Change in reach

It must be said that sizes S and M, sold with a 29 "front wheel and 27.5" rear wheel, cannot opt for the 29 "rear wheel size due to the shorter wagon and therefore the lack of material. space to allow the wheel to complete the entire excursion without hitting the frame.

FLIP CHIP for changing the wheel size: remember that on small sizes (SM) it is not possible to put the 29 "on the rear due to lack of physical space

THE RESPONSE OF THE TEST

Let's be honest: this is a bike with crazy limits and it's very difficult for us ordinary riders to push it to the limit. On the bikes up to the Enduro segment I feel fully on track, but here we suffer a bit: it takes a lot of physicality, a lot of technique and a little madness. Right now I'm missing at least 2 of the 3 elements mentioned, but thanks also to Matteo's help, we tried at least to put it to the test. Our test will be more of a comparison with the Enduro world since I don't feel like making a pure comparison with other downhill. For this reason it would be nice, in the future, to invite the strongest Italian riders for a comparative test.

Matteo Anici engaged in the test

Coming back to us, the Sender remains very quiet on descents, a very pleasant feature given the fact that there are foam rails inside the frame which help to make the cables slam inside silent.

Our test took place on technical descents but far from the artificiality and speed of the bike parks (given the winter period it is not possible to move in the mountainous areas typical of bike parks). Here is the link of one of the complete runs.

Davide Finetto busy during the video test

Small preamble: anyone who has never ridden a DH should know that driving is very physical and must be aggressive. If we do not have this style it is very easy to find ourselves in more difficulty with a DH than with a downhill Enduro.

In this test he will speak in us since Matthew's impressions are also present. In the more tortuous and slower sections it maintains the line so much that, even if they are more cumbersome than an enduro, it allows you to draw lines that not even in the TRON film. In the hands of an experienced rider, the gap with an enduro is very high: some lines require audacity and aggression but the Sender allows us to override everything.

In the steepest and fastest sections, even better if broken down, it gives its best. What every cup rider is looking for. In the broken-down it is impressive and difficult to describe: all the trails look like cushions and so we are led to go looking for the most imprisoned Bike Parks on earth to try to find the limit of this vehicle. The question is: are you ready to have a vehicle with such limitations? The head should also be ready to take the "quantum leap".

Matteo Anici show

For example Matteo, during the test, came up with a: "better wait to buy me a DH ... it can end badly".

The only flaw: the pedalability uphill. We said no to the shuttle and tried to pedal it to the start of the descent: an ordeal. Joking aside, we haven't found any defects, and this demonstrates the crazy limits of this Sender: low center of gravity and stable. Or rather, there could be a defect, but derived from the biker's possible lack of technique. At first we found it a bit clumsy on the rear and not very reactive: it often made us lose balance when we tried to pump out of corners or on small jumps. When we stopped riding it playfully like an enduro, but kicking it down as God intended, we begin to appreciate its characteristics. That's why those who run in downhill they often see enduro riders as pussies: here you don't play with the bike but jump only when there's speed and you can't keep the bike glued to the ground. The concept is: the faster you go, the more stable the Sender proves to be.

The verdict
A DH without compromise

Canyon has produced a real DH ready for racing: the experience gained in the World Cup can be seen and the technological solutions, and the attention to detail, are many in the Sender. A high-performance, modern model that is well suited to the racing world and intense use in the bike park. No compromise.

At the age of 18 I passed into the cross country competing at national/international level as an Under23. Past Elite, I made the choice to take things more lightly from a training point of view, and my love for gravity disciplines was born, training me as an FCI MTB instructor and guide. Now I have made passion my profession by managing 2 MTB centers on the island of Elba (Bike Center Elba and Elba MTB), creating the FANTAmtb and telling in an ironic but professional way everything that revolves around MTB thanks to 365mountainbike and 365TV (YouTube'PULITI dentro BIKER fuori').
