Maximum cargo space meets maximum comfort.
But this time, safety also takes a leap forward.
The new CamelBak HAWG 20 It is the first MTB backpack equipped with technology RECCO®, a location system used in mountain rescue and now also available in our world.
I tested it during several trail and enduro rides.
Luckily I tried the backpack… and didn't have to have anyone come and get it.

RECCO TECHNICAL DATA SHEET
Type: Integrated passive reflector
Power supply: No battery
Activation: Not necessary
Aerial survey coverage: up to 1 km² in about 6 minutes
use: Location by rescue teams equipped with RECCO detector

How does RECCO technology work?
RECCO uses a harmonic radar system composed of:
⃣Passive reflector
Integrated into the backpack.
It has no batteries, it doesn't activate, and it requires no maintenance. It's always operational.
⃣RECCO detector
Provided to rescuers, on the ground or in helicopters.
It sends a radar signal that is reflected by the device at a different frequency, making it recognizable and precisely located.
The advantage?
- It does not depend on telephone coverage
- It does not depend on GPS
- It works even if the biker is unconscious
- Drastically reduces search times
In the woods, among ravines, cliffs and thick vegetation, this can make a huge difference.
Usage impressions
I tested the HAWG 20 on long rides, with lots of elevation gain and technical sections.
Comfort and weight distribution
One of the limitations I've always found with backpacks is the pressure on the trapezius and shoulders, which can create muscle tension and reduce the smoothness of the ride.
Here the situation changes.
The distribution of the shoulder straps, the front straps and the fit around the spine significantly reduce pressure on the shoulders.
The two front bands effectively distribute the weight, while the waist belt stabilizes the load even on the most challenging descents.
The result is a feeling of greater freedom of movement, both uphill and downhill.
Load capacity
The large main bag is well organized, with several compartments that allow you to distribute tools, clothing and protections in an orderly fashion.
The ability to hold up to 6L of water makes it perfect for long outings or hot days.
The Magnetic Tube Trap™ system is practical and intuitive: the tube always remains in place and ready for use.
Stability and mobility
The Air Support™ Pro panel works well at managing heat, while the close-fitting construction on the back allows the pack to follow the body's movements.
It doesn't dance, it doesn't move and it doesn't alter its balance in the technical sections.
Conclusioni
The CamelBak HAWG 20 isn’t just a roomy backpack.
AND:
- A tool for long days on the MTB
- An intelligent cargo transport system
- A well-designed ergonomic support
- And now also a device that integrates concrete safety technology
RECCO technology does not replace other emergency devices, but it can dramatically reduce search times in complex environments.
And when it comes to rescue, time is everything.
