Backpack or waist pack for mountain biking? A practical guide + real-world tests of the Camelbak Podium Flow 2 and Chase Adventure 8 to choose the ideal solution for short and long rides.

The choice between backpack e pouch It's one of the most frequent questions among bikers.
The simplest answer is known: For short trips a bum bag is better, for long trips a backpack is better.
But in practice factors such as dimensions, ergonomics, posture and tools really needed during the exit.

In this article we analyze the advantages and limitations of both solutions and report our field test of two iconic products: the Camelbak Podium Flow 2 and Camelbak Chase Adventure 8 backpack/vest.

Backpack vs. Fanny Pack: Which Should You Choose?

✔️ When to prefer the backpack

  • For laps long or with a lot of difference in height
  • When you need a more complete tool kit
  • If you want to bring a windbreaker or warm garment
  • To have more autonomy in terms of food and hydration
  • If you prefer to distribute the weight on your shoulders rather than your waist

✔️ When to prefer the baby carrier

  • For laps short or medium where only the essentials are needed
  • If you want maximum freedom of movement in the upper body
  • If you suffer from trapezius tension
  • If you want quick access to essential items
  • If you don't need to bring extra clothing

Ergonomics and space: what really changes

The backpack

Modern MTB backpacks offer a much improved fit compared to the past:

  • the rear panels are more adherent,
  • the straps distribute the loads better,
  • the “dancing backpack” has practically disappeared from quality solutions.

Even with the essentials, a backpack can be a good choice.
Against: Shoulder straps can put strain on the harness and slightly limit mobility while riding.

  • if you have tension in your neck and trapezius → better pouch
  • if you have a few pounds on your abdomen → better backpack

Product tests: Camelbak Podium Flow 2 and Chase Adventure 8

Camelbak was the first brand to bring the concept of hydration backpack in the 90s and continues to innovate with ergonomic and reliable solutions.

Below is our real-world experience this fall.

Camelbak Podium Flow 2 – The essential hip pack for short/medium rides

Technical detail:

  • Podium Dirt Series water bottle 620 ml included
  • Quick-access water bottle pocket with secure hold even on the technician
  • Zippered pockets for smartphones and essentials
  • Integrated tool organization (CO₂, patch, multitool)
  • Breathable Air Mesh

How it behaves on the field

The ergonomics are amazing: often baby carriers tend to constrict the waist, while the Podium Flow 2 remains stable and comfortable even on long climbs.
The water bottle, even if in the rear position, is easy to grasp and put it back in place even while pedaling.
Well-distributed pockets for smartphones and action cams (DJI 360), with residual space for other lightweight gear.

Camelbak Chase Adventure 8 – The vest/pack for long, epic rides

Key Features:

How it behaves on the field

It has become my favorite product for the winter.
Incredible fit: the double strap on the shoulder straps allows for perfect weight distribution, reducing the “pulling bag” effect.
The carrying capacity is excellent, and the front pockets are very handy for items you always have ready.
The water hose remains stable and does not move, and the lateral passage prevents kinks.
