When I started mountain biking, the only way to protect my feet from the cold were neoprene gaiters. They worked… sort of. Perhaps they mostly provided psychological reassurance, but that was what it was, and you had to make do with it.
Then things changed, slowly at first and dramatically in recent years: today, cold, snow, and frost are no longer scary. Technologies have evolved, materials have improved, and what was once a compromise is now a given.
new fi'zi:k Terra Artica GTX They perfectly embody this evolution. They're the result of years of development, materials research, and attention to the biker's true comfort. And yes: besides being extremely functional, they're also super stylish, with truly eye-catching color combinations.
November: A full month of field testing
I dedicated all of November to testing these shoes in every possible situation:
- heavy rain
- morning outings in frost
- long, agile rides on the plain
- slow and cold climbs
- technical sections that can also be tackled on foot
In short: everything you need to understand if a winter shoe can really become yours best friends of the most difficult months.
The result?
The Terra Artica GTX has already earned a special place in my shoe rack: the one on the top right, which for me is the “first choice” for every morning outing.
Stiff sole, maximum efficiency
The sole offers the right amount of rigidity to transfer power to the pedals without dispersion, while still maintaining that minimum amount of flexibility useful when walking on difficult terrain.
The grip is excellent in all conditions: mud, snow, wet terrain. When you have to dismount because the bike is stuck, the shoe continues to guarantee safety and stability.
Perfect closure: BOA + Velcro at the ankle
The combination of tightening MARK L6 and the Velcro band at the top allows for immediate, precise and stable adjustment.
- The BOA wraps the foot evenly, without pressure points.
- The ankle closure guarantees freedom of movement but at the same time insulation and protection from the cold.
This system is now a guarantee, but on this shoe it really gives its best.
Brushed fleece interior: warmth and comfort
One of the elements that struck me the most is the interior in brushed fleece:
- warm without being suffocating
- soft to the point of feeling like a cuddle
- perfect for maintaining temperature even on longer outings
It's the kind of detail that makes the difference on the pitch.
GORE-TEX Cirrus: surprising waterproofness
The membrane GORE-TEX Cirrus It is one of the strong points of the shoe.
Throughout the month of testing:
- the water never entered
- the wind stays completely out
- the foot always remains dry, even at the end of the outing
The surprising thing is the breathability: even after hours and hours, I never had the sensation of damp or sweaty feet.
Neutral insole: excellent base for customization
Fi'zi:k has chosen a neutral insole, capable of adapting well to different types of feet.
A choice that I really appreciated: it allows the biker to use, if necessary, his own personalized insole.
(Unavoidable parenthesis: after the custom saddles, of which you can find HERE the test, how long is left until a project one-to-one also for the cycling insole?)
Conclusion: a shoe that deserves a place under the tree
After a full month of use, I can say that the Terra Artica GTX It is one of the best winter shoes available today for MTB and Gravel.
Warm, waterproof, comfortable, precise… and with an aesthetic that doesn't go unnoticed.
This shoe would look great under any biker's tree.
Dear Santa, have you taken note?
