Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) started 2024 by winning again: so far he has won in all the races he has participated in, soloing his rival Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) during the first laps.
On a wet, muddy and treacherous course at the Sven Nys Cycling Center in Baal, Van der Poel attacked early on and put Van Aert and Pim Ronhaar (Baloise Trek) into difficulty, who were together for much of the race.
Bad start for Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), his Achilles heel, and then difficulty in recovering the top positions on a course not suited to his characteristics. Van Aert finished in second place almost two minutes behind, while Ronhaar finished in third place at 2:44. Pidcock, after fighting for 4th position for a long time, ends up outside the Top10.
Van der Haar extended his lead in the X2O Trophy with fourth place ahead of Vanthourenhout.
