In 2024, the marathon world championship saw the triumph of two experts cross country, Mona Mitterwallner and Simon Andreassen, both members of Cannondale Factory Racing, the same team as Alan Hatherly, XC World Champion. This year will remain etched in the history of the team directed by Manuel Fumic.
Already in 2022, during the World Cup in Denmark, Samuel Gaze and Pauline Ferrand Prevot had won the title, and the same thing had happened in 2023 in Glasgow with Enrique Avancini. The latter had already won the 2018 World Championships in the Dolomites, confirming his versatility as an athlete. However, recent courses tend to favor cross-country riders, who must resist for about 4/5 hours of racing.
Leonardo Paez, the favorite in the world championship and already winner of two titles, suffered an unfortunate “triple puncture” this year that prevented him from competing for the victory, despite an attempted comeback that brought him to 12th place.
Despite the adversities, Gioele De Cosmo achieved a remarkable seventh place, demonstrating significant growth thanks to the work with his coach Matteo Lonati and confirming his abilities on courses suitable for those coming from cross country. Other Italians, such as Nicholas Samparisi and Dario Cerchi, obtained 13th and 23rd place respectively, while among the women, Claudia Peretti and Debora Piana finished in 12th and 13th position. Samuele Porro closed with a good 10th place.
