Richards and Gaze the first winners in the Short Track World Cup

The 2024 WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series kicked off on Saturday with two explosive XCC races in Mairiporã, Brazil.

Evie Richards (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli) and Sam Gaze (Alpecin-Deceuninck) got off to a flying start with commanding performances, but while Richards managed to impose her authority on the women's elite race with a decisive solo shot for the line , Gaze was forced to work her way to the finish line in a nail-biting finish in the men's race.

The 2024 WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series started in hot and sticky conditions in Mairiporã (Brazil), with temperatures of 29 degrees and 80% humidity. Evie Richards (Trek Factory Racing-Pirelli) challenged with an aggressive and fearless performance in the UCI Elite Women's World Cup Cross-country Short Track (XCC).

Richards said: “It started with a pretty big group and then a couple of different girls took the lead and pushed. Kate [Courtney] threw a fit and I was behind her. I simply responded to the attack. It was really hot. Especially because the UK has been cloudy for six months straight. It's good to get some sun and some vitamin D on your body."

THE UCI WORLD CHAMPION MAKES A STATEMENT IN THE MEN'S SHORT TRACK

It was a battle of the short track powerhouses in the men's race as UCI World Champion Sam Gaze (Alpecin-Deceuninck) took a last-gasp win after a thrilling battle with Luca Schwarzbauer (Canyon CLLCTV XCO).

Gaze spoke after the race: “It's been a really tough couple of weeks, it was really hard to concentrate on my work at some points, but I came out here and put together a good performance. The start was very critical for me and most of the time I wasn't lucky, but I have to say I was lucky on the starting lap, and then from there I just tried to recover as best I could before moving on. I'm super happy, good signs for the next two weeks, happy to have had a good start.

"Luca [Schwarzbauer] is a great guy, we found a bit of collaboration, just trying to keep the speed the way we wanted. There's a big advantage running at the front and as soon as I got there, I realized the advantage they had, so we tried to maintain it and then, to be honest, I didn't really think it was possible to do the sprint. I was completely at my wits' end, but obviously so was everyone else. This is the Short Track."

Runner-up Luca Schwarzbauer said: “It was a surprisingly nice track and I had Sam on my side. We are not teammates but at least Canyon teammates and in the end we could help each other a little, also I didn't attack him 100%. I don't know who was the strongest, but in the end I'm very happy to provide the final image for Canyon together. I wasn't 100% sure of my form. I was motivated but I still didn't feel the heavy weight on my shoulders. Last year I realized that when I'm leaner I can get better but it's also very stressful."

Third place Martin Vidaurre: “Finishing third here in Brazil is simply fantastic. There were many Chilean fans here. I am so happy. I like being a biker. "
