RUNNERS TO WATCH

After the first two UCI XCO and XCC World Cup races in April of the 2025 WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series, some riders have already shown that they have good reasons to aim for the overall titles.

In the women's field, Samara Maxwell (Decathlon Ford Racing Team) was the surprise package, taking her and New Zealand's first win in the Women's UCI XCO Elite World Cup in the first round, followed by second place six days later. The New Zealander already has a 100-point lead over Jenny Rissveds (Canyon CLLCTV XCO), 2016 Olympic gold medalist, leads a chasing group of Nicole Koller (Ghost Factory Racing) and Evie Richards (Trek Factory Racing – Pirelli).

However, the standings could be turned upside down on Sunday, with the UCI XCO World Champion Puck Stones (Alpecin-Deceuninck) who will make their debut in the 2025 series and the reigning overall series winner of the UCI XCO and XCC World Cup Alexandra Keller (Thömus Maxon) who plans to return to form after a disappointing second round in Araxá.

In the men's field, Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) leads both championships, having finished first and second in the two UCI XCO World Cup stops in Brazil, where he also took two UCI XCC World Cup victories. The American is in great form and similar results in Nové Mĕsto Na Moravĕ would allow him to build up a significant lead after just three stops. The UCI XCC World Champion Victor Koretzky (Specialized Factory Racing) is not used to playing second fiddle, but this year he has only managed to get the better of Blevins once, while their teammates Martin Vidaurre Kossman e Adrien Boichis (Specialized Factory Racing) score a landslide victory for the American manufacturer at the top of the standings.

Jordan Sarrou (BMC Factory Racing),  Alan Hatherley (Giant Factory Off-Road Team-XC) e  Nino Schurter (Scott-SRAM MTB Racing Team) are the best of the rest, with the Swiss champion aiming for a record-breaking seventh UCI XCO World Cup victory at the Czech venue. To do that, however, he will have to get the better of Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), the Dutchman who starts his first UCI World Cup since 2021 this weekend. The 2023 UCI Road World Champion, 2024 UCI Gravel World Champion and seven-time UCI Cyclo-cross World Champion is aiming for an elusive XCO rainbow jersey this summer and begins his off-road campaign in the Czech Republic. Although his road cycling commitments make it unlikely he will feature in the overall standings, the multidisciplinary champion be a favorite at any UCI World Cup event you enter, including both races this weekend.
