The men's elite qualifications were interrupted for about 40 minutes after only 13 out of 180 athletes had started. Loris Revelli (5th) and Davide Palazzari (1st) were among the first athletes to start but it must be said that Davide Palazzari put behind a certain Matt Walker, winner in Leogang in 2022. And among women, 10th place for Veronika Widmann.
In the men's race, after the top 14 riders, a downpour came and made the track considerably more treacherous with later riders struggling to match their previous times. Canadian Finn Iles was the best of the last starters managing to finish in 7th position.
Of note is the excellent time of Davide Cappello, 13th place for him despite not starting among the first.
Now Palazzari will be the last to drop in Saturday's semifinal. Briton Charlie Hatton (Continental Atherton Racing) is protected, so he will qualify despite him missing out on the top 60, as will Greg Minaar of the Santa Cruz Syndicate. The elites will be back in action on Saturday for the semi-finals and finals.
