Simone Avondetto and Martina Berta among the Elites, Fabio Bassignana and Valentina Corvi among the Under 23s, and Giovanni Bosio and Angelica Gatto among the Juniors won the tricolor jersey.
The course set up by Torpado JPR within the Tenuta Rive degli Angeli estate put all the athletes to the test, with ramps up to 25%, technical descents, rocks, roots, artificial sections, and constant changes in pace. The heat, rain, and constantly changing terrain made the day even more challenging.
Simone Avondetto wins the first Italian Elite XCO title
The men's Elite race closed the Italian Championships program with the success of Simone Avondetto, who achieved his first Italian title in the Elite category.
The Wilier-Vittoria Factory Team rider took the lead immediately, supported by a team that perfectly managed every phase of the race. In the early laps, defending champion Luca Braidot remained in close contact, but as the laps progressed, Avondetto gradually increased his lead.
The rain that fell early on made the course even more technical. When the sun returned to illuminate the circuit, the Piedmontese had built a sufficient lead to control the race until the finish.
Avondetto finished in 1:25:48, edging out teammate Juri Zanotti, who was second at 1:20, completing a prestigious one-two for the Wilier-Vittoria Factory Team. Matteo Siffredi took third place thanks to a brilliant comeback that allowed him to overtake Braidot in the closing stages.
The new Italian champion will now be able to wear the tricolor jersey in international competitions as well, with the World Championships in Val di Sole already in his sights.
Martina Berta wins her ninth Elite title
Among the Elite women, Martina Berta won the Italian national jersey, winning the ninth Italian title of her career and confirming her position as one of the key figures in national mountain biking.
The standard-bearer of the Army Sports Centre initially had to deal with Giada Specia, back competitive after last season's serious injury. The two ran together in the first half of the race, before Berta's decisive attack.
Without forcing a sharp attack, the Italian champion built her lead by gradually increasing the pace on the challenging Nervesa course. Specia finished in second place, just 20 seconds behind, while Sara Cortinovis, making her debut in the Elite category, earned a valuable bronze medal.
For Martina Berta, the title comes just a few weeks after her success in the World Cup in La Thuile and represents an important step towards the World Championships in Val di Sole.
