The 28-year-old intends to dedicate himself to the road and in 2025 he is ready to combine MTB and road racing, a transition that only a few cyclists have managed to successfully achieve.
The newly crowned MTB world champion had an exceptional off-road season, also winning a bronze medal at the Olympics, becoming the first African and non-European cyclist to do so in this discipline.
Having spent his career focusing primarily on MTB, Hatherly clearly has a big motor and GreenEDGE Cycling is delighted to have the opportunity to recruit the talented rider and is keen to see what he can achieve on the road at the highest level in a professional WorldTeam environment.
In addition to his impressive mountain bike record, Hatherly has also dabbled in road racing and his national level racing results include a second place finish in the South African Time Trial Championships.

Alan Hatherley
“I’m incredibly excited for this new chapter in my cycling career and very grateful for the opportunity to ride for GreenEDGE Cycling for the next two seasons. I think now is the perfect time for me to step out of my comfort zone and grow even more. Moving to a WorldTour road team is obviously something totally new for me, it’s going to be a steep learning curve and I’ll be learning from the best. Combining road and MTB is new and refreshing and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!”
Brent Copeland – General Manager
“Alan has clearly had a breakthrough season in the MTB discipline, and this shows that he still has a lot to give. We are thrilled to be working with such a talented rider and believe that our strong support network within the WorldTeam is something that Hatherly will benefit greatly from.
We hope that together we can achieve great things, he will certainly have many teammates and experienced staff to learn from”.
