Barcelona never disappoints. The consolidated UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Cup round always offers exciting racing and deserving winners, and that was the case again in 2024. The revamped track gave riders more opportunities for overtaking, which resulted in some tough and physical racing on the front stairs of the mighty Palau Nacional on Montjuïc hill.
The day couldn't have started better for the Catalan home crowd: local star Marta Cano took victory in the qualifying time trials, with the smallest possible margin: Gaia Tormena was only a hundredth of a second (!) slower than favorite of the Cano house. In the men's qualifications, Serres immediately demonstrated that he was in excellent form, setting the best time.

The first heats proved disastrous for UCI World Cup leaders Ede-Karoly Molnar and Marion Fromberger, winners of last week's opening race in Paris. UEC European champion Molnar was eliminated after a fall in the round of 16, Fromberger was involved in the quarter-finals. Both would end up losing their precious UCI World Cup jerseys to the race winners.
In the finals, both Serres and Tormena dominated the heat from start to finish. Tormena celebrated alone, preceding Annemoon van Dienst (NED), Marta Cano (ESP) and Didi de Vries (NED), who crashed. In the men's finals, Serres led the entire race, finally overtaking Nils-Obed Riecker (GER), Titouan Perrin-Ganier (FRA) and Quentin Schrotzenberger (FRA) in the sprint.

In the women's category, Fromberger's early elimination changed the dynamics of the competition: “This is an elimination one: you don't always have to expect the same final. A mistake can cost a lot. And that's what happened today, but I'm sure Marion will be back next time,” Tormena said. In the new UCI World Cup ranking, the Italian star now scores 200 points. Van Dienst is second with 145 points, Fromberger third with 142.
In the general classification, Serres enjoys a margin of 45 points over second-placed Edvin Lindh. Defending winner Titouan Perrin-Ganier is third, with a 55-point deficit.
Tormena, Serres and the rest of the elimination competitors now take a short break from World Cup racing, to prepare for the next rounds of the UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Cup: racing will resume on May 19 in Palangkaraya, Indonesia.
