More rain and mud greeted the riders who were going to fight for the European champion title. Two names stood out from the rest: Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and Puck Pieterse. The Dutchwoman was also the reigning champion. The rain that has been hitting the course all week not only didn't disappear for Sunday's races, but it intensified. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot started strong making the selection alongside Puck Pieterse. Behind them in the Italians Giada Specia and Chiara Teocchi.
The INEOS Grenadiers rider showed a lot of power but suffered more from the mud than the young Dutchwoman and had to give way slowly until she retired, leaving the field open to Pieterse.
Greta Seiwald is fifth, at 4'34, Giada Specia twelfth, at 7'14. Seiwald, in the running for a podium for a large part of the race, suffered a puncture and an accident which forced her to pit twice.
Among the U23 women, the best result for Italy is sixth place for Valentina Corvi, 2'47 behind the winner, the Swiss Monique Halter. Also on the podium are the German Carla Hahn, at 26″, and the other Swiss, Anina Hutter (at 38″).
