The Dutch champion made the difference after just over two minutes, giving spectators a spectacular solo that led him to win his seventh world title, thus tying Eric De Vlaeminck's record of victories in the discipline.
Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done for Wout Van Aert. Starting from the fourth row, the Belgian had to make his way through traffic on the first lap, even being forced to brake sharply against a barrier and risking a fall. Despite a solid comeback, Van Aert had to settle for second place, 45 seconds behind the winner. Completing the podium was European champion Thibau Nys, who finished the race 1'06" behind. For Italy, Gioele Bertolini he crossed the finish line in 22nd place, +5:35 from the winner.
