Luke Meier Smith surprises everyone at Lake Placid DH World Cup

Luke Meier-Smith (Giant Factory Off-Road Team DH) took a thrilling first UCI Men’s Elite Downhill World Cup victory of his career.

Luke Meier-Smith (Giant Factory Off-Road Team DH) marked his transition from enduro to downhill with a well-deserved victory. The twenty-three-year-old hadn't reached the podium this season before arriving at the Lake Placid Olympic Region, New York.

All eyes were on the UCI Downhill World Champion, Jackson Goldstone (Santa Cruz Syndicate), forced to push hard in the technical section due to his small frame. The Canadian responded with a two-second advantage over his nearest rival in the fast, open terrain. Goldstone was full of confidence as he soared over the jumps in the lower section and clocked a faster time of 3:07, adding further pressure to his rivals.

Lori's vergier  (Commencal/Muc-Off By Riding Addiction) was looking to consolidate his third place in the overall standings, but lost valuable time and points in the standings after a crash. Goldstone's time was vulnerable and  Henri Kiefer (Canyon CLLCTV Factory Team) remained in contention with the Canadian's time in the technical section. The German then used his strength to gain speed and lower the leading time to 3:06.

Also Loic Bruni (Specialized Gravity) was under pressure in his bid for the overall win. The Frenchman chose fast lines in the technical and challenging upper section to stay in contention and matched rival Goldstone's split times. Bruni missed his timing on a jump before the finish line, losing valuable time and finishing sixth, two places behind Goldstone.
