The event, organized by the Pedale Fidentino Race Team in collaboration with the Italian Cycling Federation and named in memory of Lorenzo Vernazza, a member of the "Pedale" who passed away prematurely, proved to be a resounding success. A 4.100-meter course in the beautiful Tabiano Terme area, surrounded by nature, with technical yet safe sections, and a thorough organization, welcomed hundreds of athletes to this sporting weekend.
Turning to the day's races, the outcome was a high-level and thrilling competition, with several sprint finishes, a sign of the well-being of national cycling.
In the Junior category, a small group led by Ettore Fabbro broke away on the first lap, setting the pace. The quartet led by Federico Rosario Brafa and composed of Ettore Fabbro, Gabriele Scagliola, and Elia Rial remained closely matched at mid-race. Pietro Cao's gap widened, losing contact with the race leader. On the third lap, nothing changed, with the quartet unchanged and Cao in pursuit. The Junior race was decided at the finish with a splendid sprint between the two KTM Protek Elettrosystem riders, with Federico Rosario Brafa taking the win ahead of Ettore Fabbro.
The women's race featured three categories, Junior, Under 23, and Elite. For the Elite, Martina Berta gained seconds lap after lap, leaving a gap behind her. Chiara Teocchi was well behind on the second lap, but it was in the final stages of the race that the Army riders mounted a last-gasp battle, crossing the finish line in a sprint. Berta won by a hair's breadth.
Sara Cortinovis put in a remarkable performance, setting the fastest lap in all categories and firmly in the lead. On the second lap, Cortinovis extended her lead to 50 seconds over Valentina Corvi and easily finished her category, taking the Italian national jersey.
Giorgia Pellizzotti set the pace for the Junior race alongside her colleagues Elisa Ferri and Nicole Azzetti. With one lap to go, Ferri crashed. Pellizzotti continued to race and won by two minutes over her closest rival Nicole Azzetti.
An emotional afternoon ensued with the 13.45:23 pm race for the men's under-XNUMX category, with Matteo Siffredi taking victory in a sprint finish with Elian Paccagnella.
The Elite athletes took to the track for the final race of the day at 16:XNUMX PM. In the early laps, the leading group remained closely matched, with seven riders leading. After the second lap, Gioele De Cosmo, Simone Avondetto, and Juri Zanotti stood out. At the midpoint, Juri Zanotti made a strong push, followed by Gioele Bertolini, Luca Braidot, and Simone Avondetto. On the sixth lap, Braidot caught up with Zanotti and, on the final climb, dropped the Lecco rider, reclaiming the Italian title in the premier category. Nadir Colledani rounded out the podium.
At the end of the second day of racing, Pedale Fidentino held a truly splendid commemorative event in memory of Lorenzo Vernazza.
