World Cup CX Overijse 2022: Vanthourenhout VS Pidcock

A few too many mistakes by Pidcock give the victory to a perky Michael Vanthourenhout. Puck Pieterse wins among women.

Beautiful weekend in the mud for the best of cyclocross. Staged the Overijse stage in full Belgian style: mud and a very demanding route. Tom Pidcock tried everything to struggle: problem immediately after the start and restart from the last position. In a lap and a half he got back on the lead pair formed by Iserbyt and Vanthourenhout and immediately put them to the whip. Iserbyt breaks away almost immediately and will suffer from his rocket start throughout the race.

The race becomes a 2-man challenge between the world champion Pidcock and the European champion Vanthourenhout. Pidcock seems to have an extra gear and keeps the Belgian talent behind by a few meters, who suffers from keeping up with the Briton. But halfway through the race Pidcock loses brilliance and begins to make small mistakes that bring Vanthourenhout back, who instead makes no mistakes.

In the final stages, a fall by Pidcock saves Vanthourenhout about ten seconds, who he manages to hold on to the finish, despite the ruthless pursuit by the British.

2 Italians at the start: Gioele Bertolini (27th) and Lorenzo Masciarelli (36th). While among women, 19th place for Sara Casasola and 30th for Francesca Baroni.

Now the cup classification sees Eli Iserbyt always in the lead but with only a point advantage over Laurens Sweeck, winner yesterday at the Superprestige. Among women, Fem Van Empel dominates the lead.
