Mathieu van der Poel, currently out of action with a back injury, has decided to undergo "minor surgery" on his knee, according to his team Alpecin-Fenix.
Van der Poel, according to the team, suffered a knee tear following a previous fall and developed painless scar tissue but, as he is in a hiatus, decided to have it removed. The operation took place on January 8 and a subsequent visit by Van der Poel's doctor, Toon Claes, was "positive".
Knee surgery is unrelated to his back, the team said. It is not yet known when Van der Poel will be able to return to training and racing.
