TruTune is one of the latest innovations regarding our forks. This is an activated carbon insert to be inserted in the air part. Like a classic token, but here the air volume is not reduced but increased. How can an insert increase the air volume inside the chamber?
The functionality of the TruTune is opposite to that of normal inserts, which reduce the air volume to generate more progressiveness. The activated carbons, similar to a very porous sponge, in fact allow more air molecules to be inside, therefore being tighter together and making more of them fit in the same space. Each cubic centimeter of activated carbon behaves like two cubic centimeters of empty space!
WHAT IS ACTIVATED CARBON?
Activated carbon is a highly porous form of carbon. The raw material is usually carbonized in an oxygen-free environment and then activated by subjecting it to steam or oxygen at high temperatures. The magic of this material happens at the molecular level. When gas molecules hit the carbon surface, some become trapped by the action of Van der Waals forces. As air pressure increases, excess air molecules are adsorbed onto the carbon and are then released (or desorbed) when the pressure decreases.
This results in a much more linear pressure curve, with a lower peak pressure, despite the bladder being exactly the same size.
By using a TruTune insert, the pressure at the end of the stroke is much lower, despite starting from the same value. Since the fork has no real additional volume, it can only mean that the insert has created extra “volume”.
With TruTune, you can increase the boost pressure without having high initial stiffness: this results in a similar pressure at the end of the stroke, but a higher pressure in the initial part of the stroke. Higher charge pressure can still achieve lower peak pressures with a TruTune positive chamber insert.
