New tooth profile for Wolf Tooth crowns. For the 2015 season Wolf Tooth has introduced a new tooth design on its crowns with an anti-fall profile. It is a unique design that optimizes the performance and durability of the chainrings without compromising their chain retention properties.
Wolf Tooth products stand out for their durability and silence, characteristics that are further improved with this new tooth profile. Here are some details on the features and operation of this system, the result of hours of design, prototype tests and small improvements.
Asymmetrical tooth profile
Above the detail view of the tooth with asymmetrical profile.
The front (right) has a very different shape than the back.
The concept is very simple: the front is the one that transmits the force to the chain, the rear one must discharge mud, debris and dirt. For this reason, having two completely different functions, it is logical that they also have two different forms.
More material only where it is needed
The image above shows the detail of how a Wolf Tooth chain and crown work together.
The front part of the asymmetrical tooth has the maximum possible width: a greater contact area between the tooth and the chain at this point means minimizing the wear of the tooth itself.
The left (rear) side of the tooth, on the other hand, functions only as a guide for the chain when it is engaged, but the load it must bear is minimal. Consumption on this side, which therefore has a smaller width than the chain pin, is not a problem, so it was possible to remove some material to create a channel that would allow dirt to flow.
With more space, the result is a quieter, smoother transmission with even better chain retention in heavy mud.
Optimized for mud
This sectional view clearly shows the mud discharge channel, which allows Wolf Tooth fall protection crowns to perform at their best even in particularly harsh conditions and on heavy soils. It is a real channel created by eliminating unnecessary material, as explained above, which allows the mud to flow through the links of the chain. All surfaces are arranged in such a way that there are no sharp corners to hold dirt.
Wolf Tooth owns the intellectual property on this solution, with several pending patents.
The 104 BCD, direct mount SRAM, Race Face Cinch and Cannondale chainrings are already equipped with the new tooth profile, which will be extended to the entire range in the coming weeks.
