SuperEnduro 2015, a year of reflection

Source: press release

Read The history of the Italian SuperEnduro

Usually the last release of the year, or the first of the new year, announces the Superenduro calendar for the next season, not this time. For the first time in 8 years in 2015 there will be no races on the national Superenduro circuit.
It was a very difficult and painful decision but indispensable for the very life of Superenduro.

In 2007 Superenduro created a race format that in a few years has become the reference on a global level. A format that allows you to organize an enduro competition in any place that has the minimum characteristics of altitude difference and presence of trails. Without the constraints of the ski lifts. A format made up of precise details and rules that today form the basis of the regulations of most national circuits and the Enduro World Series.
It has been an intense and continuous work in which Superenduro has constantly raised the bar to make each event an experience with a great use of energy, time and economic resources. A work certainly not always perfect, which gives life to a movement of enormous importance, created visibility opportunities for pilots, companies and localities that today are absolute references even at an international level. And created a model for dozens of other circuits around the world.
Stopping to evaluate and understand which is the best way for the future of Superenduro but also of the discipline itself, has become indispensable. At all levels. We will do this by listening to all the players involved in the sport starting from the athletes and teams, professionals and amateurs, who make up the backbone of the Italian enduro. But also the media and industry that built pages and pages of communication on the Superenduro and developed an important market. And there will be discussions with the Italian Cycling Federation and with the UCI, which is already underway.

Franco Monchiero: “It was a difficult but necessary decision. I don't want to think about doing things "halfway" because we can no longer guarantee the quality standard we have accustomed our participants to. We are not capable of it and it was never Superenduro's intentions. Already during 2014 we had to make some sacrifices on some aspects of some races. I don't want to think of having to compromise in 2015, it is better to stop and see if the conditions are right to continue along the path we took in 2008 and possibly think about Superenduro 2.0. But only if the conditions are right. The organization of an enduro race is one of the most complex things in the field of bike events, there is still a long way to go and many details to be fine-tuned to organize a 100% race but, as fussy as they are, that is my goal. In the UK, the National Federation has stopped supporting enduro, a risk I don't want to take in Italy. We are the first nation in the world in which the Cycling Federation has recognized the discipline and sanctioned the first title of Italian Champion in 2011 in Limone Piemonte. A race that I will always remember as one of the most important moments for world enduro together with the Finale Ligure race in 2012 when we were around a table with Chris, Fred and Enrico and we started working on the Enduro World Series. With these thoughts alive in my head and the awareness that the world recognizes us as a leadership in terms of innovation and vision, I want to evaluate with calmness and the time it takes before taking the field again "
Enrico Guala: "I can't count the sleepless nights spent thinking about the future of Superenduro, in recent weeks the rumors about a possible stop have also begun to appear on social media and the media and the affection of many Superenduro fans and supporters is was an even more difficult obstacle to overcome to reach this decision. We had a long discussion with Franco about what would have been better to do and, in parallel with this decision which for many can be traumatic, we have also started to develop ideas and thoughts for the future. Just as we have always done in these first 7 years of working together. It has been a really intense 7 years, in which we have dedicated an enormous amount of time and energy to the Superenduro, needless to deny that today we suffer from a certain fatigue, physical and mental, and we need to recover energy and stimuli. What we don't want is having to compromise between rider needs, location and budget. We want to go back to having fun and entertaining, to collaborate with the best local staff in Italy, to plow the most beautiful paths, discover new ones, and to give sport the best possible context to develop further, in the right direction. The 2015 break will give us the opportunity to visit other events and maybe even participate as competitors, get to know emerging organizational realities, meet the participants and develop ideas that we could then use and systematically in the future. "

In 2015, however, Superenduro will not stand still. He will organize the Italian stage of EWS in Finale Ligure and will in fact be the Italian referent of the EWS with which he is working side by side. A stage that in 2012 before the EWS was in fact the most important enduro race in the world and that for 2015 will reserve new surprises. Superenduro staff will collaborate with some national enduro races bringing their know-how and experience. By popular demand, he will also be alongside some international organizers in the Enduro World Series stages.
In terms of communication, the Superenduro site will be the reference point for the EWS in Italy and will provide information on everything we are going to do in 2015. The social channels will remain active to communicate sensitive and interesting information and news and to maintain and indeed stimulate dialogue between Superenduro and riders, local organizers, industry and the media.
Superenduro will also organize a series of round tables in the first months of 2015, where the development strategies of the discipline will be discussed with drivers, teams, media, industry and organizers.
Finally, we want to thank all those who have been close to us in this difficult decision, understanding the reasons and making themselves available to dialogue and collaborate in the future. Local organizations, riders, teams, media, and above all the partners who have shown great trust in us by remaining by our side also for 2015 to support the communication work and give us the opportunity to continue working for the future of the discipline.
