In addition to being the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world, for many participants the HERO is also the most beautiful thanks to the scenery of the Dolomites in which it takes place: a competition in the UNESCO World Heritage is not an everyday thing. This is why the Südtirol Sellaronda HERO, scheduled for Saturday 27 June 2015, openly takes the side of nature and the protection of the territory, boasting the Green Event certification.
And the eco-sustainable spirit of the organizers does not stop there and is also reaffirmed in the race pack where the Heroes will find the exclusive Swiss pine cushion, made from the typical wood of the Dolomite woods.
The Dolomites are hard rocks, shaped over time, but they are also very fragile and sensitive, as they reveal themselves at sunset when they “blush” when the sun goes down, before slipping into the night. A unique scenario in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, which if on the one hand it can be admired and experienced, on the other hand it must be protected to make it accessible also to future generations: a concrete commitment by the organizing committee of the Südtirol Sellaronda HERO that has been working, since the first edition of 2010, to ensure that the Dolomite territory is respected by the organization and by the athletes.
Green certified event
The 2015 HERO will host the UCI Marathon World Championship on Saturday 27 June, but in addition to this important event, the event also boasts another title, becoming part of the Green Events of Alto Adige. But what are Green Events? Events organized with the environment in mind, which are committed to reducing the impact of the race on the environment as much as possible and which adopt concrete ecological measures, can be included in the rigorous list drawn up by the Province of Bolzano. For example, the organizers reduce energy resources to a minimum, print all the information material on recycled paper, use ecological plates and cutlery at the pasta party, and make available to their public, a rich menu of "zero kilometer" gastronomic products of the territory. of Südtirol.

Heroes of the environment
A further measure adopted by the organizing committee on the "green" line of the HERO 2015 is to awaken the civic sense of all participants: waste collection areas will be set up near the refreshment areas, and the organization asks athletes to keep your waste (used gels, paper bars and everything a biker normally consumes during a race) to deposit them precisely in these dedicated areas. And since this is a rule included in the regulation, those who do not respect it risk disqualification from the race.
Green-style HERO race pack
Even the HERO race pack has strong “green” connotations thanks to the unique gift that the organization has chosen: a real “Dolomite” product, the exclusive HERO branded pine cushion, an exclusive object reserved for 4.015 members. The pillow is a 100% natural product, manufactured in South Tyrolean farms and processed according to the ancient tradition. It is made of organic cotton, the padding is made of stone pine shavings, obtained from the Swiss stone pine wood that grows spontaneously in the Dolomites.
The peculiarity of this pillow lies precisely in the use of pine which, as shown by studies by a team of researchers from the British University of Oxford, published in the scientific journal “New Scientist”, boasts surprising natural and therapeutic properties. It has been documented that people who sleep in a Swiss pine bed feel more vital and rested upon awakening. In addition, a reduction in heartbeats of 3.500 beats per day was found. In fact, sleeping on a pillow containing pine is like having an extra hour of rest and a more relaxed sleep, especially in times of stress.
