SPOLETO NORCIA – FROM RAILWAY TO CYCLE PATH
Due to its plano-altimetric characteristics, the Spoleto-Norcia railway, inaugurated in 1926, was considered an Alpine railway and was called the Gotthard of Umbria. The route included 19 tunnels (one almost 2 kilometers long at its highest point) and 24 futuristic engineering bridges and viaducts of great architectural value, with various helical stretches of line and gradients of up to 45 per thousand. Closed in 1968, in July 2014 it was reopened as a cycle/pedestrian path, characterized by narrow gorges and high mountain landscapes. In 2015, the Spoleto-Norcia cycle path won the first edition of the Italian cycling tourism Oscar.
