SHIMANO e-bike motors: What are the differences between EP8 and EP6?

In 2022, the EP801 was launched, the successor to our popular EP800 e-bike system. But how does it compare to the EP600? Let's take a look.

Shimano's new motor (EP8) offers more assistance, more connectivity options, and is compatible with the new battery management system and enables technologies AUTO SHIFT and FREE SHIFT.

The EP6 (product code EP600) was developed as an attractively priced variant for the upper mid-range. It not only offers the necessary power for well-equipped e-mountain bikes, but is also installed on city and trekking bikes and in a special EP6 Cargo version on transport bikes.

Similarities between the two e-bike systems

Both mid-drive motors have a maximum torque of 85 Newton meters (Nm), a continuous rated power of 250 watts and use the second generation of the battery management system. Both offer support up to a speed of 25 km/h, the standard for e-bikes.

Differences between the EP801 and the EP6: Peak Power, Weight and Materials

If you want maximum performance, ride off-road and care about the lightest bike possible, the EP801 e-bike system is the perfect choice. The EP801 ideally balances power and weight, has excellent heat dissipation and a state-of-the-art design. It has a peak power of 600 watts, to reduce climbs, and a lightweight magnesium housing.

However, if you are a frequent traveler in urban areas, commute by bike or enjoy wonderful bike trips, the EP600 is a good alternative, also in terms of expense. It stands out for its versatility, sporty performance and excellent value for money. The EP600 has a peak power of 500 watts and a lightweight aluminum housing.

Features and technologies

Both engines have a variety of features and technologies. Among them is FINE TUNE MODE, which offers up to 15 levels of individually adjustable power assistance on demand.

Additionally, both new e-bike systems include Shimano’s revolutionary approach of decoupling the chainring from the rest of the motor. This allows the chainring to rotate freely, even when the rider is standing on the pedals.

The two motors feature the new CUES Di2 and DEORE XT Di2 shifting systems which, with this combination, can enable revolutionary new functions such as FREE SHIFT and AUTO SHIFT.

Additionally, both systems are compatible with HYPERGLIDE+ and LINKGLIDE shifting technologies.
