Source: press release

The Trek Selle San Marco Team athletes, divided on Sunday 13 March between the CAPE EPIC in South Africa and the GRANFONDO CASTELLO DI MONTERIGGIONI in Tuscany, offer emotions, podiums and a victory.

An exciting start to the season for the orange bikers who have done more than honor in both competitions. From South Africa comes the surprising third place of the couple formed by Damiano Ferraro and Samuele Porro obtained in the prologue that opened the 13th edition of one of the toughest stage races on the planet: the Cape Epic.

A test against time, on a 26 km path between the dirt roads around the Meerendal Wine Estate, where one of the favorite couples made up of the German Platt and the Swiss Huber, who stopped the chronometer at 1:04. : 34. Behind them the other Swiss-German pair Rohrbach-Pfrommer at 1'02 ", with a finish slightly better than our Team Trek Selle San Marco A who finished at 1'10" from the winners.

“We are very happy with how our Cape Epic started” comments Damiano Ferraro at the end of today's test. Instead a great race came out. We managed to be fast both uphill and downhill, conquering an unexpected podium despite a small slip by Samuele in the final that made us lose a few seconds. A third place that gives us great morale in view of what awaits us: the real Cape Epic begins tomorrow ”.

Less fortunate but still good start for Team Trek Selle San Marco B, formed by the couple Ivan Alvarez Gutierrez and Fabian Rabensteiner. Their test was, in fact, conditioned by a mechanical problem that occurred to the Spaniard, which prevented him from pedaling at his best in the last 10 km, as told by the South Tyrolean Rabensteiner: "We can consider this first stage a good one, since up to half race we were in pretty good shape. A minute behind us Rohrbach / Pfrommer had started and in the end they will be second and on us they had not recovered so much. Unfortunately, however, about less than 8-10km from the arrival in Ivan the gear lever stopped preventing him from changing, thus remaining with a very agile 34/34 ratio on the flat and at that point we lost a lot. I must say that all in all the sensations were positive and we look forward to the next stages with confidence, where if possible we will try to help our captains ”. For Gutierrez and Rabensteiner 18th time at + 5'33 ”from the winners.

Tomorrow, the first stage of the Cape Epic in line with departure and arrival in Saronsberg for a total of 106 km and 2.300m altitude difference.

The first victory of the season comes from Tuscany and it is conquered by Alexey Medvedev, on his debut with the Trek Selle San Marco Team jersey. The strong Russian biker imposed himself alone at the GRANFONDO CASTELLO DI MONTERIGGIONI in the province of Siena, where high-level rivals were present.
On the 52 km course with an altitude difference of 1600 meters traced on the Sienese hill, Medvedev took the lead right from the start, leading the race first in tandem with Paez, then with the Colombian forced to stop for a puncture, flying alone on the final climb towards the finish line of the Castle, where he arrived with a time of 01:58:13 in front of Marzio Deho (+ 1'27 ") and Daniele Mensi (+ 2'41").

“The first race with Team Trek Selle San Marco went really well” explains Medvedev happily. “I started immediately with fire, I took the lead and did almost the entire race with Paez, then remaining alone after his puncture. At that point I just had to go and win. I have to thank the staff and all the sponsors who support us, starting with Trek, because the bicycle is the best you can have ”.

It was not the only podium for Team Trek Selle San Marco at GF CASTELLO DI MONTERIGGIONI. In Tuscany there were also the Under 23 Mattia Faglia - held back by a puncture when he was in 19th position, having reached the 35th position in his category - and Christina Kollmann. The Austrian champion was the protagonist in the women's field of a brilliant test, which saw her close in second place at + 2'08 ”by the winner Katazina Sosna.
