Shimano has always been synonymous with reliability and precision. Especially in the world of mountain biking, where impacts, mud, rocks, and extreme use constantly test every component, many riders simply look for a product that can be installed once and continues to work season after season without requiring special attention.
It's a belief now deeply rooted in the industry: while many brands rapidly release new products, Shimano has always preferred to follow a different philosophy. No chasing after passing fads, but rather gradual development, thorough testing, and extensive experience gained on trails and in competitions around the world. The new DEORE M7200/M6200 family perfectly embodies this philosophy. Shimano has updated one of the most popular groupsets among MTB enthusiasts by introducing numerous solutions derived directly from the higher-end XTR and Deore XT groupsets.
Drivetrain designed to withstand the toughest trails
The heart of the new groupset is the rear derailleur, completely redesigned to offer precise shifting even under heavy load and greater resistance to impacts.
The new SHIMANO SHADOW ES technology introduces a low-profile, wedge-shaped design that reduces the risk of impact with rocks, roots, and obstacles on the trail. In the event of a crash, the derailleur is designed to better absorb the impact and return quickly to its original position.
Shimano has also increased the strength of the chain stabiliser system by 70% thanks to a new double spring configuration, further improving drivetrain security on the roughest terrain.
Riders will be able to choose between two usage philosophies:
- HYPERGLIDE+, dedicated to those looking for maximum gear shifting speed under stress;
- LINKGLIDE, developed to prioritize durability, fluidity and longevity of the components.
New crankset and improved chain retention
The DEORE M6200 crankset uses a two-piece construction with a 24mm steel axle and 176mm Q-factor.
The new Direct Mount steel chainring integrates DYNAMIC CHAIN ENGAGEMENT technology, designed to improve chain control and reduce the risk of falls even on the roughest sections.
12-speed cassettes for every need
Two new 10-51 tooth 12-speed cassettes are also arriving.
The CS-M7200 focuses on performance thanks to the use of a lightweight alloy final drive pinion that helps keep weight down.
The CS-M6200, on the other hand, prioritizes robustness and durability over time, while maintaining the same wide range of gear ratios.
Both use the MICRO SPLINE body.
Improved handlebar ergonomics
Shimano has also worked a lot on the shifting feel.
The new DEORE controls feature shorter travel and more direct actuation, with lever positions designed to follow hand movement more naturally.
Dedicated versions are available for both HYPERGLIDE+ and LINKGLIDE drivetrains, as well as a high-torque e-MTB-specific variant that limits control to just one gear change at a time, protecting the drivetrain from excessive stress.
Brakes derived from XT and XTR
The braking system also benefits directly from the technologies developed for the higher-end groupsets in the Shimano range.
The new BL-M6200 lever uses SERVO WAVE technology, which allows for faster pad engagement and more progressive power modulation.
The system has also been updated with new internal seals and a low-viscosity mineral oil that maintains consistent performance on both the coldest days and during long summer descents.
As for the calipers, Shimano offers two options:
- BR-M6220 four-piston, dedicated to Trail and Enduro;
- BR-M6200 twin-piston, designed for Cross Country.
Our considerations
At first glance, this new DEORE seems to represent exactly what many bikers are asking for today: less complexity, more reliability and still affordable costs.
Robustness, reliability, ergonomics, and shifting quality were the primary development goals. In a time when the MTB market often seems focused on innovation at all costs, the new DEORE represents a solid offering for those seeking components capable of performing well, over the long term, and in any conditions.
And this is probably exactly what has always made Shimano groupsets so popular with bikers all over the world.
