In particular, the latter had a significant impact on the cost of motorway tolls. In fact, Aspi (Autostrade per l'Italia Spa.) stated that, although in the last 4 years the cost of tolls has remained unchanged, starting from July 2022 the rates have increased by about1,5%.
In fact, in the elaboration of the economic plan of the Aspi network, the increase of the energy costs and raw materials which from October 2022 will affect ours bills.
What are the most expensive motorways in Italy?
The price of highway tariffs in 2023 has increased following the increase in inflation and the energy crisis. However, before we see what the more expensive highways, let's analyze what are the factors affecting the cost of tolls.
In Italy there are about 1.300 km of non-toll sections managed by Anas (National Autonomous Company of State Roads) while 6.000 km are those that are managed from individuals and therefore subject to the payment of a toll. In fact, private individuals require the payment of a more or less high toll from users, in exchange for the construction and management of the motorway section.
- First, the cost starts from basic rate which depends on the costs incurred for the construction and management of the motorway itself.
- In addition, this is increased based on the length and size of the section itself, the maintenance required and the conformation of the territory in which the motorway was built.
In general, however, the costs are agreed between the Concessionary Company andGovernment body and regulated by the Concession. Below we analyze which are the most expensive motorway sections, indicating the cost for every 10 km travelled:
In the first place we find theA5 Turin-Mont Blanc with a toll of 3,45 euros, followed by ring roads of Milan with 2,54 euros and theA35 Brescia – Milan with 2,35 euros. Analyzing the graph above, we note that among the 10 most expensive motorways, 3 connect or are close to the Lombard capital.
The Best and Worst Highways
A study conducted by Altroconsumo asked more than 1.700 citizens to express a judgment from 1 to 100 on the conditions of the Italian motorways that are traveled every day. The results produced by this analysis have identified the five best and worst highways in Italy. Let's see them below:

On the podium for the best motorways in Italy, we find theA27 Venice-Belluno which got a score of 80/100, followed by theA22 Brenner-Modena and from'A9 Lainate-Chiasso with both scoring 72/100.
On the contrary, the last place is occupied by theA10 Genoa-Ventimiglia with a score of 42/100. Not least I'm there A18 Messina-Catania with 46/100 and the A6 Turin-Savona with 53/100.
In recent years there are many i work in progress on motorway stretches to improve the conditions of the motorways and guarantee an adequate service. Who knows if the tariffs for users will be increased again in the future.
