This does not mean that the Dutchman gives up mountain biking forever. He still has a long-term plan in mind to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics. And he also wants to become world champion in cyclocross, road and MTB. The same goal pursued by Tom Pidcock.
His road calendar for this 2022 is very busy. After the Giro d'Italia he confirmed that he wanted to participate in the Tour de France and, subsequently, to prepare for the road world championship.
