Kyle Strait, one of the Rampage veterans e 2 times winner of this event, had undergone a very serious fall during the tests. The dynamics appear quite clear from the video shot by Cam Zink: Kyle Strait tries a drop with the problem that does not have much space for the run-up. He srait gives some nice pedal strokes but comes short and is thrown forward.

The result of these falls are 3 broken vertebrae: T4, T5 and T6. There was a lot of concern over the next few hours but, after a delicate surgery, Kyle Strait was back on his feet.

Here is the comment of Cam Zink, winner of the Rampage in 2010 (roll of honor), once the race is over in 10th place (Rampage 2022 report).
I was thinking about how well our guinea pigs were doing across that line. But you always have to stay focused and respect the ground because it can change your entire life in an instant… and of course your hopes of winning the competition. When it goes well it all seems easy, but things can change unexpectedly. Kyle and I roll together as a team. After over 20 years of pedaling together, I have never seen Kyle Strait motionless. Honestly, I got a flash that he was dead as I was running towards him. One of the three broken vertebrae was crushed in this crash as he stood motionless on the edge of another 2m drop with a completely vulnerable spinal cord. In the misfortune of the fall, it went very well. And it can always get worse. I wanted to quit. After lunch we only had 4 hours of rehearsal before taking part in the finals.
Our original line didn't work - the former Oakley Sender, aka Big Gulp, wasn't possible with the speed we had. I tried to make it work with another line and almost broke my legs trying our 15m jump “Evel Knievel”. After giving everything I had, we had to close the line: my goal was to win and find another line. But it could always be worse. Recharge your Kyle batteries, stay strong and enjoy the ride 👊
