For its twelfth edition, BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites 2022 takes an active part in promoting the culture of sustainability with the HERO TO ZERO program which includes initiatives capable of involving athletes and their companions.

The BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites 2022 has always been close to environmental issues. The organizing committee knows how much the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which since the first edition have hosted the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world, have contributed to the great success of the event.

To reinforce what has already been done, this year a program has been launched expressly dedicated to supporting the territory: with the sustainability program HERO TO ZERO, we therefore want to achieve precise sustainability objectives, the same ones identified by the United Nations (SDGs) for safeguarding the planet.

To achieve important and coveted sporting goals, just like that of the BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites, not only theory is needed, but also practice. For this reason, precise actions have been identified that all the participants in the event, from the athletes, to the companions, to the professionals, are warmly invited to put into practice.

"We think that there is no better way to strive for a great result than to join forces - comments Gerhard Vanzi, creator of the HERO Series circuit - for this reason in the HERO TO ZERO program we have developed actions and initiatives that we hope will come welcomed by all those present at the HERO, so that they are the protagonists of this important bet: to make our event as sustainable as possible ».

The HERO TO ZERO program, inspired by the United Nations "Sports for Climate Actions" initiative, of which it is a signatory, and by the guidelines of the UCI (International Cycling Union), envisages three areas of interest, which involve the environment, society and governance.

The HERO Dolomites for the environment

The BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites has made choices aimed at reducing its emissions, such as the use of energy from renewable sources and meticulous attention to the management of waste recycling. For the entire duration of the HERO Bike Festival, for example, the use of compostable tableware at the pasta party will be provided, and the use of the 17 fountains present in Selva Val Gardena will be encouraged, to fill the water bottles and jugs, and therefore do without of plastic bottles.

Of course, the presence of excellent zero-km products is inevitable. The prizes will also be local: Andreas Nussbaumer created the winner's trophy in dolomitic stone. Finally, the communication will also be “Zero Impact”, with the creation of the HERO RACE App through which all those who download it on their smartphone will have access to useful information for their stay during the race. At the Alperia ZERO Village exhibition area, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the sustainability initiatives of the companies present. Promoted the arrival by train and travel via the ski lifts, or on pedals or electric vehicles during the HERO Bike Festival.

The HERO Dolomites for the social sphere

Sustainability also passes through the social sphere, and that is why BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites firmly supports gender equality, in participation, in awards and in social and institutional communication. The goal is to involve every person, so that they can live a unique and inclusive experience. For this reason, moments dedicated to the little ones have been created, such as the HERO Dolomites KIDS and the path to learn how to pedal on the Pra da Nives meadow, in collaboration with the municipality and the Tourist Association of Selva di Val Gardena.

And to support their land also from a sporting point of view, also this year the partnership with Sporthilfe Alto Adige was reconfirmed, the association that supports young South Tyrolean sports talents and to which the collection of a special fundraiser is destined. .

The HERO Dolomites for governance

The third area of sustainability involves governance: BMW HERO Südtirol Dolomites has chosen transparency in the choice of its suppliers and partners, who support the same values of sustainability.
