In Albstadt, Germany, the first "world" challenge between the best riders of the cross country that Red Bull TV offered us with commentary in Italian by the London 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Marco Aurelio Fontana and the youtuber Andrea Ziliani. In case you missed it, race replays are available at www.redbull.com.

Between a tampon and the other (mandatory to access the race course safely), the athletes were confronted with every type of weather possible. On Friday morning it snowed, while on Sunday the sun was shining and the thermometer touched 30 °. From wet tests, through a slippery XCC and a scorching XCO, the first stage of the World Cup has given it all.

The show among the top 40 in the world started on Friday with the short track test. Among the women, the Swiss Linda Indergand attacked from afar, but during the last lap she had to bow to the world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot. Third place for the British Annie Last, ninth for the Italian champion Eva Lechner. In the men's field, Mathieu van der Poel's show of strength who, after a season away from mtb, comes back to bullying his opponents with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in his sights. The Dutch phenomenon, after trying an attack on the second lap, remained covered from the wind, only to sink the decisive blow with a lap from the end. Behind him the best were Victor Koretzky and the world champion Nino Schurter. In the 10 two Italians: Luca Braidot finished 8th, Nadir Colledani 9th.

On Sunday the show went live with the XCO races. Loana Lecomte is 21 years old and could compete in the lower category, but she has "beaten" the big ones. The little Frenchwoman of Team Massi made it clear right from the start that the victory of a year ago in Nove Mesto would not remain an isolated exploit. In the first ascent she imposed a pace that no rival could handle and, lap after lap, she increased her advantage. Demonstrating an enviable form and veteran consistency, she relegated her compatriot Ferrand-Prévot to 53 ", the Americans Haley Batten to 1'15" and Kate Courtney to 1'20 ". To complete the podium, with a good comeback race, Yana Belomoina. Just out of 10 the tricolor Eva Lechner, 11a to 3'11 "from the winner.

At the start of the men's race all the spotlights were on MVDP and Tom Pidcock, but in the end the phenomena of the road and cyclocross were put in their place by a “pure” biker like Victor Koretzky. Thanks also to the talents of the multidiscipline it was a hard-fought and spectacular challenge, until the end, so much so that it was decided only in the sprint. In the sprint the Frenchman hit his first World Cup success by beating Nino Schurter. Unlike some big names, such as the winner of the XCC test, who perhaps stoned in the first laps and also dropped in the final due to the unexpected heat, the KMC Orbea rider saved himself by keeping to the wheel and managed to shrewdness to give himself the most important success in his career. Third place at 23 ″ for the Swiss Mathias Flueckiger, with a locked dropper post which forced him to tackle the last climbs off the saddle, who at the finish preceded the Czech Ondrej Cink. The performance of the XCO Under 23 world champion Pidcock, who started in 100th position, concludes 5th and promises some good ones, to applause. The best of the Italians was Gerhard Kerschbaumer, 14th.

Just enough time to catch your breath and next weekend the show continues in Nové Město, in the Czech Republic, and as always on Red Bull TV, available both in the app version – on smartphones, tablets and smart TVs – and in the web version. So, see you on Friday 14 May from 17.50:16 pm with the Short Track and Sunday 11 May with the Olympic Cross Country (the live broadcast of the women's race starts at 15 am, from 2021 pm the live broadcast of the race reserved for elite men) of the second stage of the Mercedes Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup XNUMX.
