However, the mountain is a context to be experienced with respect and great attention due to the particular environmental conditions that the mountain can reserve. Among these, the possibility of being in areas without telephone coverage, which is essential in an emergency.

To meet the need to be able to communicate anytime, anywhere, Garmin offers inReach technology. Among the devices of the portable GPS range that include it, Garmin inReach® Mini 2 and Garmin GPSMAP® 66i, satellite messaging and tracking devices that, thanks to Iridium® satellite coverage, guarantee everyone can communicate from anywhere.

Summer is just around the corner will see the mountains again as a popular destination for those who want to practice outdoor sports and in contact with nature. Trekking, mountaineering, but also mountain biking or the simplest hiking on easy trails accessible to all: high altitude is undoubtedly an environment capable of giving great emotions and that must be experienced with awareness and maximum attention.

The mountain context, in fact, is as fascinating as it is full of unexpected events that can lead to situations that require particular attention: a sudden change in the weather, the choice of a wrong path or a trivial fall can suddenly interrupt a day of fun. In these cases, safety is an element that cannot be ignored.

Communication: a fundamental factor

In the event of an emergency, especially in inaccessible areas, the timeliness with which to notify family members and help can be fundamental. Unfortunately, GSM coverage in the mountains is not always guaranteed. Garmin and its inReach technology intervene precisely in these situations, allowing you to communicate anytime and anywhere, without any kind of criticality.
Based on the Iridium® satellite constellation, Garmin's inReach technology is able to exchange messages and distress calls where the smartphone has no coverage. The devices that integrate it allow you to communicate your geo-localized position by email or text message but also by sharing the link of the inReach MapShare portal so that our loved ones can always know where we are and if we are having problems during our exit.
But it is in an emergency that inReach becomes of paramount importance.
By pressing the appropriate SOS button, it is in fact possible to send an emergency request signal to Garmin IERCC (Garmin International Emergency Response Coordination Center), the international emergency management center, active globally 24 hours a day which, once the report is received, will immediately activate the assistance and recovery procedures.

GARMIN INREACH® MINI 2: communicate anytime, anywhere

Garmin inReach Mini 2 is a satellite communication and messaging device that ensures that you always stay in touch with someone, even in the absence of telephone coverage. Pocket-sized and light, it allows you to communicate via text message, via e-mail and is able to send geo-localized SOS messages.
Developed for 360 ° outdoor use, it provides up to 30 days of autonomy while new navigation functions allow safe travel in all environments. Among these, TrackBack stands out, to guide the hiker on his own steps and return safely to the starting point, in addition to the new compatibility with Garmin Explore ™, the Garmin app dedicated to the management of points, tracks and routes directly from your smartphone. The app also allows you to take advantage of the phone keypad to more conveniently compose messages and emails to send via inReach Mini 2.

GARMIN GPSMAP® 66i: always in touch, step by step

For more experienced hikers, or for those who want to rely on the navigation and orientation functions present on Garmin handhelds, GPSMAP 66i offers precise and reliable geolocation with GPS / GLONASS / GALILEO satellites and the sharing of messages and position with the Iridium® network. This device has a barometric altimeter, electronic compass and preloaded TopoActive Europe cartography clearly visible on the 3 '' color display, to allow the user to consult in detail all the characteristics of the territory: altitude lines, roads, coasts, rivers, peaks and viewpoints. It offers great potential on the use of maps, allowing the implementation of maps with greater detail, as in the case of Trek Map Italia V6 PRO, the Italian topographic map produced by Garmin Italia, or as the BirdsEye ™ cartography downloadable for free on the GPSMAP 66i also via Wi-Fi® connection: a unique navigation experience with high-resolution satellite images of the places you will cross. Rugged, shock-resistant and waterproof, it integrates a rechargeable battery with an autonomy of up to 35 hours, with location tracking every 10 minutes, and up to 200 hours in “Expedition” mode, with tracking intervals every 30 minutes. Trip planning, archiving of activities and saving points of interest are guaranteed by GPSMAP 66i and can also be synchronized and stored on your smartphone via the Garmin ExploreTM app, or on your PC with the BasecampTM software.

Garmin InReach Mini 2 is available at a suggested retail price of 399,99 Euros.
GPSMAP 66i is available at a suggested retail price of 599,99 euros.
Both require a subscription to transmit satellite data.
