Cape Epic is the race of races, the Tour de France of MTB. 8 days, 681 km and over 16.000 meters in altitude. The Wilier Triestina - Pirelli Factory Team flew to South Africa with 2 pairs ready to compete, unfortunately not exactly the two pre-established pairs at the beginning of the season: Samuel Porro unfortunately he had to give up taking part in the Cape Epic, a race that saw him climb the final podium twice.
During the Andalucia Bike Race the comasco has accused some cardiac anomalies. The first checks did not find any particular problems, but with the team it was decided to further investigate with a series of other exams and above all a rest period without competitions.
The Wilier Triestina - Pirelli Factory Team thus found itself without an athlete a few days before the start of one of the most important races on the calendar. Fortunately, a very good one was found substitute in young English Cameron Orr, 23 years old and with a bright future ahead of him.
Cameron will pair with Daniel Geismayr, Senator of the Cape Epic with 7 participations, who will undoubtedly be able to give all the best advice to his young teammate.
The other couple, the one who, given the results of Andalucia BikeRace and Mediterranean Epic, has the condition to make a test race, will be regularly formed by Fabian Rabensteiner, another veteran of the South African race with 6 participations to his credit, e Wout Alleman, at his first Cape Epic, but with a great desire to prove on the most difficult terrain that he is one of the best marathon runners on the world scene.
The Cape Epic 2022 will kick off on Sunday 20 March with a 24 km chronoprologue and 700 meters of altitude difference with start and finish in Lourensford Wine Estate.
