Day 2 and Day 3 at Duchenne Heroes

Another report from our correspondents at Duchenne Heroes!

DUCHENNE HEROES 23 JUNE 2014 DAY 2

Today a great ride on the trails of the Sellarona Hero 2014, a very selective route in the mountains of Alto Adige and Veneto. Departure from Corvara and ascent to Passo Campolongo on the tracks of the previous Saturday event, very fast descent to Arabba and beginning of the long climb towards Passo Pordoi. Today I wondered how the agonists do a race with these difficulties, our electric vehicle on most of the first part of the climb cannot find the right feeling with the ground due to the steep slope and the lack of grip, we are forced to set foot on the ground and I can assure you that pushing a bike weighing almost 30 kg on an uphill gradient of over 30% is not very easy. The bikes demonstrate good behavior in the push phase, the engine fits precisely and the modes with 4 degrees of power are very useful for the different needs of the route. We find a good feeling with the vehicles by managing the mixture between gearbox and engine power at the same time, we note that for a good pedaling and a continuity of performance we must keep the frequency of the pedals high by increasing the power, according to the different needs, also looking for to always change in a neutral situation by the power expressed.

We then arrive at 2300 meters above sea level in the shadow of the Marmolada and spectacular scenarios are always under our eyes, we set foot on the snow that prevents us from keeping the pedaling continuous. Although the road is not the best, we manage to get to a wonderful trail that, through curves and counter-curves, stones, snow, streams to cross, takes us to the last two hairpin bends of the climb to Passo Pordoi with customary photos under the namesake sign where we do our homework (right Marzio?).

We begin the descent towards the Lupo Bianco above Canazei and our GPS makes us a little angry for the slowness in giving us the right indications on the route, in fact we are forced to go back on the paved road for a few hairpin bends and then resume the single track in descent that has very technical passages and challenging slopes. In this stretch we put our vehicles and our vehicles in difficulty, but also our driving skills, in fact both the weight of the bike and the unsuitable tires at the bottom of the track prevent us from letting go of the pace which necessarily becomes very rigid and nervous with the natural consequences of the case.

In these sections we can also consider the diversity of the means available, while the Thorn equipped with both a fork and a shock absorber with good travel allows some more obstacles, the Jarifa with only the fork and a very rigid frame leaves little room for obstacles. and puts a strain on the biker's joints.

During the descent we also meet the Check Point of the Duchenne organization which in addition to the usual supplements and something more substantial, allows us to do the scheduled battery change of the bikes to get to the end without worries, the autonomy of the electric bikes is always a sensitive topic and the manufacturer must always pay close attention to providing safe and reliable equipment. In this case, the Bionx batteries in the two versions presented good performance and decent autonomy, but with little regularity between one and the other, it almost seemed that they did not have the same autonomy.

Once we arrive at Lupo Bianco, the climb towards Passo Sella begins, which in its 5 Kilometers has a few breaths and a slope that is always very high, but which we face at a good pace given the newly changed battery and the desire to arrive at the campsite on time. anticipated. In step after the necessary customary photo for all the reasons you know (true MARZIO), we continue downhill towards Plan de Gralba without the use of our GPS which after playing a few tricks on it, turns off permanently after running out of charge (unfortunately does not even keep a day of work). We continue on a dirt road according to our knowledge of the area until we cross the asphalt slope towards the Gardena Pass that we take with a click on the right, for 7 kilometers at a speed never below 20 per hour and some points of the 25 that uphill they are not bad. It is needless to say that when we arrive at the Pass we are forced to take the usual photo (just Marzio) and then continue on the same dirt descent made the day before to arrive at the Corvara campsite well in advance of the stage program.

Excellent day on the bike even today, perfect weather, extraordinary views, who knows that from next year we will not find any other team with this type of equipment, given that our presence has aroused particular interest and curiosity.

See you tomorrow good night.

DUCHENNE HEROS - 24 JUNE 2014 - DAY 3

Today we rode on a very beautiful and fascinating path but also in the first part not very suitable for our means. Starting from Corvara we headed towards San Cassiano to continue on the cycle path towards Armentarola, from where we turned towards Val Parola to cross Passo Limo. The entry into the Fanes-Senes - Braies Natural Park is certainly a track not to be missed for those who want to go trekking in the Dolomites, but it is absolutely not suitable for those who want to do it using a bike, of any type you can think of.

Basically we embarked on a climb on a mule track with steps, some even half a meter high, dragging our Focus of almost 30 kg already indicated above up the slope. The effort was considerable and the effort tonight is felt very accentuated, but the joy of arriving at high altitude has paid off completely because the day has given us glimpses of the view that are nothing short of enchanting. Walking through this Natural Reserve Park preserved from any human intervention, we admired its beautiful lakes and the majestic mountains that looked all around us. We arrive after a nice very fast descent with hairpin bends to the Pederù Refuge where we find the check point of the day after about 30 km and we take the opportunity to refresh ourselves and rest a few minutes.

Departure slightly downhill towards San Vigilio di Marebbe to tackle the second ascent of the day towards Passo Furcia, much more accessible because it is shorter but above all more suitable for our vehicles. Next very fun descent towards Valdaora and through the Panorama path and cycle path we return to Dobbiaco at the beautiful Camping Olimpia.

The difficulties of the day in addition to the route indicated above, were due to the fact that the engine of the Jarifa did a bit of a tantrum on the climb of the Furcia and earlier during the departure towards the Val word. Our Mio GPS was not very accurate in some parts of the route and some detours led us astray, add a few drops of rain at the start and the day did not start in the best way.

This evening, however, we took a good shower and after Italy's defeat at the World Cup, we said to ourselves that despite everything, these very intense days spent on bikes always repay you for your efforts and always leave you with a beautiful memory to tell.

Now I can say that I am really at the limit of my energy left and I go to bed very willingly, good night and sweet dreams.
