The night gave another 30 centimeters of fresh snow to the San Leonardo lakes in winter dress. The haze that characterized the Solander afternoon will be replaced tomorrow by a day where the sun and pleasant temperatures will peek out, ideal for the public and for the athletes who have come to Vermiglio after the World Cup stage in Dublin and a week of rest useful for recharging stacks.
"I feel good, but this is a particular race, different from all the others, on a surface we are not used to”, declared a smiling Mathieu Van der Poel after the session, in which he was one of the athletes to complete the most laps, particularly impressing while riding some of the most demanding sections of the track.
I found a fantastic location, and a very demanding and treacherous technical route, especially in today's wet snow conditions. I think the terrain improves as the athletes pass by, but it's a terrain that is constantly changing. Among the opponents, Michael Vanthourenhout should be kept an eye on, an athlete who drives well and is very suitable for this type of event – Laurens Sweeck
The European Champion will be one of the most dangerous rivals for the Dutch champion on the circuit of 3000 meters and 50 meters in altitude set up by the staff of Grandi Eventi Val di Sole and Flanders Classics. Gianni Vermeersch, Gravel World Champion and teammate of Van der Poel, Eli Iserbyt and the World Cup leader Laurens Sweeck are also expected from Belgium.
"The sleet softened the snow, so it was really difficult to adapt to the terrainSweeck commented. – “Lap after lap we found a different terrain, but the route will be reworked for tomorrow. It's my first time here, I expect an interesting race. "
Gioele Bertolini is the most important card of the men's blue expedition, together with the younger Jakob Dorigoni and the talented Lorenzo Masciarelli.
Even in the women's field, the underdogs go to Holland. The most eagerly awaited is undoubtedly Fem Van Empel, winner last year in Vermiglio and ruler of the World Cup season with 6 victories out of 9 contested races.
The compatriots Puck Pieterse and Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, the Canadian Maghalle Rochette, the multi-purpose Hungarian Kata Blanka Vas, the blue Silvia Persico, world champion bronze in the specialty at the last World Championships in the United States, and the more experienced compatriot Eva will try to put her in difficulty Lechner.
"At first contact with the track I thought I would have preferred a harder surface, but in reality as I turned I changed my mind. I like the route, I enjoyed it,” said Silvia Persico. – “Last year I started on dry tyres, this time I certainly won't make the same mistake."
