CX World Cup: Van Der Poel on Van Aert. Bad Pidcock in Antwerp

Van Der Poel inflicts Cross Country race gaps: today he was uncatchable for anyone. Good performance by Van Aert on his debut (2nd place). Closing the podium, Michael Vanthourenhout.

The race starts in cloudy weather but without rain: excellent track with dry conditions that make it fast. Powerful riders favored with stretches of sand and continuous raises typical of the cyclocross world cup.

Just after the start, Wout Van Aert took the lead and immediately set the race at a frenetic pace, with Van Der Haar close behind. Tom Pidcock starts badly and remains ensconced in the rear: it must be said that the course is not very suitable for his characteristics. In fact, the Antwerp course is suitable for powerful athletes. Mathieu Van Der Poel starts well and is there in the top 5 positions.

During the 2nd lap Mathieu Van Der Poel wants to show all his strength: no waiting around and snaps in Van Aert's face, who was already giving the race a wild pace. Meanwhile Tom Pidock fails to recover positions and stays around 20th place: he doesn't seem to have very brilliant legs after yesterday's victory at the Superprestige.

From there begins a solitary race for Van Der Poel, who this time does not make any driving errors and releases impressive watts: if this is his physical condition, between now and the world championships it will be hard for everyone to be able to keep his wheel. Van Aert behind continues his pace and takes off Van Der Haar, always author of very brilliant starts. Tom Pidock's comeback begins from behind and, like a real diesel, enters the top 10.

In the end the positions stabilized with Mathieu Van Der Poel who continues to gain ground and inflicts race gaps cross country. Behind him Van Aert maintains his 2nd place despite a mistake on the boards: we have seen how cyclo-cross requires adaptation races, it is not easy at the debut not to make mistakes.

Great fight for 3rd place with the cyclocross greats all very close: Iserbyt, Vanthourenhout, Sweeck, Van der Haar and Adams. With Tom Pidcock who gets dangerously close to the positions that count but pays for the bad first half of the race.
