We had the pleasure of meeting with Daniel Herin, a historical figure of Aosta Valley mountain biking and former president of the local guides, to analyze the past, present and future of this reality.
A review of the 2024 season
Hello Daniele, how did the last season go?
We are very satisfied: the numbers are growing, and this is fundamental for a reality like ours, which must be based on concrete data to plan the future.
Cervinia Bike Park: an all-mountain identity
What kind of bike park is Cervinia?
Initially we were quite “free”, organizing events such as the Mega since 2003. Over time, however, we have structured ourselves to respond to the needs of a constantly evolving sector. By increasing the numbers, we have created dedicated trails to ensure greater safety and harmonious coexistence with other tourists.
Is it correct to say that Cervinia has a strong all-mountain vocation?
Absolutely yes. From the beginning we wanted to enhance the hiking dimension of our area. This is for two reasons: on the one hand, the downhill (DH) is often perceived as a dangerous discipline and not suitable for general tourism; on the other hand, our territory lends itself perfectly to exploration. The network of mid-mountain trails allows you to create unique itineraries, such as the Matterhorn Balcony, which connects villages and offers breathtaking viewso ( HERE the article)
An emblematic example? Starting from the glacier and arriving in Chatillon: a ride that crosses the entire valley.
The Evolution of MTB
How do you see the evolution of mountain biking?
MTB is constantly moving. At the beginning there was only one bike for everything, then the disciplines were differentiated: XC, DH, freeride, and finally enduro e all mountain, which combine features from other categories. We are now witnessing the return of modern XC bikes, increasingly versatile.
In addition to technical evolution, we have also seen the sector mature in terms of services. For example, today we invest heavily in MTB schools for the youngest, a concept that was unthinkable until a few years ago. This helps us build a solid foundation for the future.
The impact of e-bikes
How have e-bikes influenced bike parks and tourism?
E-bikes have had a significant impact. On the one hand, they have allowed many people to return to the trails and explore our territory, both in the bike park and on all-mountain trails. However, they have also brought new challenges, such as managing coexistence with pedestrians.
And on the topic of security?
Initially, yes, there were problems. E-bikes allowed people with little training to reach places that were previously unthinkable, but they often lacked the technical knowledge to safely tackle the descents. Today the situation has improved: those who use e-bikes are more aware and prepared.
A look into the future
Cervinia Bike Park has evolved without losing sight of its identity. Thanks to the commitment of professionals like Daniele Herin, this corner of the Alps continues to offer unique experiences for every mountain bike enthusiast, from the hiker to the expert in technical descents.
