Officials confirmed that a serious crash occurred during the race, referring questions to the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and Cycling BC. We're told it's not a criminal investigation. The driver was reportedly wearing a full-face helmet at the time of the crash and crashed on a high-speed section of track near the end of the race.

The rider, whose name is not disclosed until his family requests him, was by all accounts an exceptional person and a talented young man with experience in DH racing.
Peter Plimmer, President and CEO of Big White, released a statement on social media , saying: “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the young athlete involved; and also to the entire community of cyclists that make up the sport of mountain biking. Our sincere thanks go to the patrols, first responders and volunteers who were on site."
Update 10:30am PST July 10th : Cycling BC has released a declaration on their website expressing sincere condolences and noting that they are working with the event organizers and local authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.
