The American rider had fallen badly during the Red Bull Rampage 2015: breakage of the 12th vertebra and very long rehabilitation process. Now, almost 8 years later, he reminds us of all his rehabilitation and the progress he has made in a video: HIS WILLPOWER IS IMPRESSIVE! Here is his post, very touching, and the related video below.
On this special day, as I celebrate another year of life, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey I have been on. It was during Red Bull Rampage, where I was living my dream as a professional mountain biker, that day my life took an unexpected turn. A devastating accident that left me paralyzed, unable to move my legs. In an instant, everything I had worked so hard for seemed to slip through my fingers.
When I hit the ground that day, I knew my life had changed forever. The future I had imagined, the one I had poured my heart and soul into, was suddenly ripped away from me. The doctors, with their grim prognosis, painted a grim picture of my chances of walking again – Paul Basagoitia

But here's the thing: I refused to let their words define me. I refused to give up my passion for cycling, the very thing that had brought me so much joy and satisfaction. And so, with unwavering determination, I embarked on a journey knowing that, while I had the support of my loved ones, I was ultimately alone with myself.
Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years. I have undergone countless surgeries, endured grueling physical therapy sessions, and faced setbacks that have tested my resolve. But through it all, I never lost sight of my goal. I visualized wiggling my toes, imagined pedaling a bike again. And, slowly, I started to see progress – Paul Basagoitia

Eight years have passed, and today I am not only able to walk, but also to ride a bike with new motivation. I took back my passion, defying adversity and embracing life. Remember, don't stress about timelines or compare yourself to others. Trust your progress, be positive and keep working towards your goals. You're not alone in this. Believe in yourself and keep moving forward – Paul Basagoitia
