Plan de Corones has not only built a bike park but the future of bike destinations

Why Plan de Corones is one of the best bike destinations

Plan de Corones represents one of Europe's finest examples of a bike destination, thanks to a collaborative project between the local community, trail builders, and tourism operators. Trails designed with careful attention to flow, constant maintenance, lines suitable for all skill levels, and a high-level hospitality transform a simple day on the bike into a complete experience. It's more than just a bike park, but a model of tourism development built around mountain biking.

Plan de Corones: when a bike destination becomes an experience

Put a group of riders, a cleverly built bike park, two days of riding and a strong desire to push. The result? More or less what happened during our experience at Plan de Corones: two intense, fun, and inspiration-filled days that speak to much more than just a mountain bike resort.

Because today, simply having a few well-maintained trails isn't enough to call yourself a bike destination. You need a vision, a shared project, and above all, the ability to put the biker at the center of the experience. And it's precisely here that Plan de Corones is proving to be one of the best performing areas in Europe.

A trail system designed to grow with riders

The first thing that strikes you is the variety of options. The trails accompany the biker throughout their development: from the simplest lines, perfect for those taking their first steps in gravity, to the most technical routes, where speed, precision, and ability to read the terrain are seriously tested.

And then there are the jump lines. The real ones. Not just jumps inserted here and there, but sequences designed to create rhythm, flow, and progression. Those who possess technique and control can truly "fly," finding that sense of continuity that distinguishes a skilfully constructed trail from one simply dug into the ground.

Every descent has its own identity. The character, pace, terrain, and approach required of the rider vary, but one constant remains: the quality of the project.

Behind every curve there is a huge amount of work

The difference between a good trail and a great trail is often not immediately visible. It's felt.

You feel it when you enter a corner at the right speed and everything feels natural. When the terrain accompanies the bike instead of fighting it. When the rhythm of the turns carries you spontaneously towards the next one without forcing you to constantly correct it.

At Plan de Corones nothing seems to be left to chance.

Behind every line is a team of skilled trail builders, supported by a project that begins long before the shovel and mini-excavator are used. They analyze the terrain, the slope development, the soil type, drainage, and the trail's evolution after thousands of passes.

Both the more artificial lines and those that exploit the natural terrain share the same design philosophy. The curves are precisely linked, the banks have the right slopes, the entries and exits are fluid, and the rhythm constantly accompanies the rider.

There are no blind turns inserted without logic, no sudden compressions, or sections where the risk arises from a design error. Safety doesn't come from lowering the technical level, but from the quality of the trail design.

And that's exactly what inspires confidence.

After a few descents, you immediately feel at ease. Your mind stops worrying about what might be around the bend and can focus exclusively on riding. You become in tune with the trail, gradually increase your pace, and find yourself looking for only one thing: to climb back up and start again.

A bike destination is born from a shared project

The real strength of Plan de Corones, however, goes beyond the individual trails.

Here, the existence of a shared territorial project is clearly evident. Mountain biking isn't an activity added to traditional tourism, but rather represents a central element of the destination's development.

When administrations, ski lifts, trail builders, accommodation facilities and local operators work in the same direction, the results become evident.

Maintenance is constant.

Trails evolve.

The lines are corrected, improved and perfected season after season.

We don't just open new trails, we continue to invest in existing ones to ensure they remain fun, safe, and sustainable over time.

This is probably the aspect that distinguishes a location with trails from a true bike destination.

Hospitality completes the experience

But the biker doesn't live only on descents.

Indeed, the more a destination focuses on stays lasting several days, the more fundamental all the elements surrounding the stay become. riding.

Hotels, refuges, restaurants, services, and hospitality directly impact the overall quality of your holiday.

And it is here that Plan de Corones surprises perhaps even more.

Over the past two days, we've encountered knowledgeable, helpful, and genuinely friendly staff. The waiters are always smiling, ready to recommend a dish, chat, or simply put the customer at ease.

Out of curiosity, I also wanted to observe their behavior towards other guests.

We were a group made up of journalists and content creators, so it would have been easy to think of a special treatment.

In reality it wasn't like that.

The same attitude was evident at every table: professionalism, promptness, and a kindness that didn't seem artificial, but rather an integral part of the local hospitality culture.

It's a detail that often goes unnoticed, but it contributes enormously to the positive memory of a holiday.

Success doesn't happen by chance

When you read the tourism numbers for Plan de Corones—with over 1.6 million winter visitors and a steady growth in summer visitors—you might think the mountains are the only reason for this.

In reality, it would be a superficial reading.

Success comes from a balance between different factors.

There are spectacular landscapes.

There are efficient systems.

There are expertly designed trails.

But above all, there is a culture of hospitality and quality that involves every level of the territory.

It is this combination of elements that transforms a simple day on the bike into an experience that remains etched in your memory.

The feeling that remains

At the end of two days of riding what remains is not just the memory of a successful jump or a perfectly executed curve.

What remains is the feeling of having visited a place that has chosen to seriously invest in mountain biking, without improvisation or shortcuts.

Plan de Corones is not just a mountain to go cycling.

It's a destination built around the biker.

And perhaps this is its greatest strength: being far from large urban centers, yet incredibly close to what true mountain biking enthusiasts are looking for today.

Well-groomed mountains, world-class trails, and a hospitality that makes every rider feel welcome. Three seemingly simple pillars, but extremely difficult to bring together. Here, however, they work in perfect balance. And that's also why, once you've put your bike on the rack, your first thought is already to return.
