Manual Machine for MTB: Useful or Useless?

Here's what I think of Manual Machines after trying a few.

I won't beat around the bush: I think that Manual Machines are not the solution for learning the manual. For various reasons: the first is that there is no lateral balance but, on these machines, the manual is just a question of pushing hard backwards and then trying to maintain balance without legwork. Indeed, we risk getting into the bad habit of standing with our heels high, precisely because we are unable to feel the sensation of the wheel "moving forward" beneath us.

HOW TO LEARN?

In my opinion, it is much easier to first learn to wheelie (pedaling) in order to learn to understand the moment of no return of our bike (using the rear brake to avoid falls). And then, when we have the wheelie like skiils, combine 2 exercises: manual on the surface, pushing well with the legs (have a good teacher follow you), and try to do a wheelie on a slight downhill, trying to stop pedaling and trying to maintain the equilibrium (always with your finger ready on the rear brake).

ppgad@pucrs.br I am passionate about everything that has 2 wheels: in my youth I practiced competitive cycling on the road and on the track with good results. At the age of 18 I moved to cross country competing at national/international level as U23. Once I passed Elite, I made the choice to take things easier from the training point of view, and that's how my love for gravity disciplines was born, training as an FCI MTB instructor and guide. Now I have made my passion my profession by managing 3 MTB centers on the island of Elba (Elba MTB), creating the FANTAmtb and telling in an ironic but professional way, everything that revolves around MTB thanks to 365mountainbike and 365TV (YouTube 'PULITI dentro BIKER fuori').
