Reliable market data and careful planning will prove their worth over the next 1-2 years. Sales have skyrocketed during the pandemic, but some of the revenue could soon be lost to a substantial number of component makers, bike makers and traders given the high stocking present. How to find a suitable market for all these components and bikes?
The total sales volume of bicycles and e-bikes in Europe and the UK decreased from 21,6 million units in 2021 to 20,2 million last year, a recent publication by CONEBI shows. At the same time, the market value increased by 7,4% to 21,2 billion euros.

Extremely unbalanced situation
Market demand (Europe) is lower than in 2021 and 2022, but is still higher than pre-covid. However, the supply chain is at such a level that component makers have shut down new production lines that went live soon after the high tide of the pandemic. Insiders told Eurobike they expect the extremely unbalanced inventory situation to last into the second half of 2024.

During one of the many events that took place on the opening day as a side program of the 1.900 exhibitors who showed their latest developments, Deborah Wu, managing director of the manufacturer of KMC Global GmbH, describes the situation: “Over the past three years, the global bicycle market has been dealing with unexpectedly rapid growth in demand, disruptions in supply chains and overstocking, and now the market is restructuring. Supply chains play an important role when trying to increase bike sales and end-user mileage. The transition to sustainable and smart processes and the current huge surplus of inventories pose challenges for these complex systems, but the market supply and demand will return to normal and most market participants will be able to overcome the current problems".
