Stunning All-Mountain MTB tour in Val Formazza

Val Formazza, with its wild charm and Walser roots, is a perfect destination for those who love all-mountain hiking. This year, although spring snowfalls delayed the start of the season, the heat at the end of July melted much of the snow, allowing you to fully enjoy these magnificent excursions.

The itinerary

The proposed all mountain tour is accessible to many and starts from Valdo, with the climb to Rifugio Margaroli and Lake Vannino. The options are different: you can take the Sagesboden chairlift for an easier ascent, followed by a hike up to the lake, or tackle the path that leads from Valdo to Canza, and then go up via a steep hike. The latter option is particularly suitable for those who use an e-MTB, while those who prefer a muscular bicycle could opt for the chairlift.

The Formazza Valley

Val Formazza is a jewel of upper Piedmont, located on the border with Switzerland. This area, with its well-rooted Walser traditions, offers a corner of peace and uncontaminated nature, with large green spaces and natural beauty that makes every visit a regenerating experience.

The tour

Starting from the Pineta campsite, where I left my new housing unit, I followed the cycle path up to Valdo, from where I decided to use the chairlift to go back up comfortably. From the arrival of the chairlift, a path led me to Lake Vannino and the Margaroli Refuge. This stretch, a mix of pedaling and portage, got me to the lake in just over an hour. For many, this could already be a satisfying destination, with the refuge's polenta and a breathtaking view as a reward. For those who still have energy, it is possible to walk along the lake, although it is not yet possible to complete the complete loop due to the conditions of the trail.

The Descent

As always, after the uphill comes the downhill. Follow the same path back to the chairlift, paying attention and moderating your speed, especially in summer, when the route is very popular with pedestrians. Once you reach the chairlift, you can choose to continue on the trail towards Canza or take the alpine path, which joins it just before the town.

This path is a natural trail, immersed in a spectacular larch forest. It's slow, technical, with tight turns and sections that require trials skills. For those who love this type of route, it will be a reward for the effort of the climb. From Canza, continue on the route that takes you back to Valdo, a worked stretch that can be traveled in both directions, which allows you to prolong the fun of the descent.

Conclusions

This all mountain ride is suitable for many skill levels. The fittest will be able to challenge themselves on the steep climbs, while those who prefer to reduce fatigue can use the chairlift. E-mtbikers will be able to enjoy a climb with spectacular views. Even in the high mountains, the descent opportunities offer technical challenges for the more experienced, while those with less experience will be able to descend safely along the gippabile.
