Commezzadura, 17/22 June 2008 – The World Cup returns to Italy after Ciocco 1991 and Livigno 2005 and does so in great style with one of the most technical courses in the circus designed by Pippo Marani. The track is feared and there is no shortage of twists and turns. Steve Peat sets the best time and will remain sitting on the hot seat for a long time... has the year of the long-awaited rainbow jersey finally arrived? The 34-year-old Englishman loses all hope when he comes down Sam Hill: a perfect descent, it floats on the roots and flies on every stone it finds along the way. A masterful interpretation and a pinch of madness. But everything vanishes at the last minute when, on the easiest curve of the route, he slips and is forced to start from a standstill in a section that his opponents face at 40km/h... despite this he is 2nd, 5 tenths behind Steve Peat. But it's still missing Gee Atherton. Atherton he doesn't do anything wrong, he too is the author of a great descent and overtakes by over 2 seconds Steve Peat who has to settle for yet another podium while Sam hill he eats his hands for a rainbow jersey thrown to the wind. It would have been the fifth of his career. But his run remains legend.
Marco Milivinti he is the author of a superlative performance: on a technical track like that of Val Di Sole he is capable of finishing in 15th place. Good performance also from the other Italians: Alan Beggin finishes 20th, Lorenzo Suding 28th. Bruno Zanchi, slightly injured, finishes 48th.
Among women there is no shortage of surprises with Céline Gros cut off by a puncture and Tracy Moseley fallen on a root. The former Junior world champion held the lead for a long time My Suemasa and remains there until the descent of the Pugin, which undermines it. But the young Savoyard, already junior world champion last year, remains on the throne only until she comes down Sabrina Jonnier. The world champion from Rotorua and Fort William takes the lead but Atherton misses. Rachel Atherton he shows that he is very comfortable on this track and goes downhill with an extra gear. Her style and physical preparation seems to be superior to her female companions and she sets a record time that would place her in the middle of the pack among her male colleagues! Elisa Canepa, the only Italian, finished 18th after a clean race.
Among the Juniors, victory by Josh Bryceland, a Briton who seems to have great talent given the gaps he manages to inflict on his opponents (he would have finished 10th in the Elite race). Among women, victory by Anaïs Pajot.
